The ceremonial steel cutting of Oceania Sonata, the inaugural ship of Oceania Cruises’ Sonata Class, was conducted today, June 9th, at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera/Venice, marking the commencement of its construction and heralding the cruise line’s next evolutionary stage.
Scheduled for its maiden voyage in summer 2027, the vessel will be succeeded by the sistership Oceania Arietta, set to enter service in 2029.
Rising to some 86,000 gross tons (volume) with capacity for approximately 1,460 passengers, the Sonata Class Oceania ships are projected to be the fleet's most capacious and amenity-rich vessels.
This development continues the longstanding alliance between Oceania Cruises and Fincantieri, the Italian shipbuilder responsible for the line’s earlier vessels—among them Oceania Marina, Riviera, Vista, and Allura.
Jason Montague, Oceani's Chief Luxury Officer, conveyed that the Sonata symbolizes the commencement of a new chapter in luxury cruising. He emphasized that Oceania remains committed to innovation alongside Fincantieri, a partner of nearly two decades, jointly delivering ships renowned for their elegance, comfort, and Italian craftsmanship at sea.
The steel‑cutting milestone represents the ninth vessel in Oceania’s roster and the largest to date, underscoring the line’s dedication to refined small‑ship experiences focused on culinary excellence and destination enrichment.
