Getting from the Riverfront

The marina is beside Riverfront Park, roughly 1 km (0.6 mi) from the historic downtown core. The lower commercial streets, visitor center and Lincoln-Douglas Square are walkable from the vessel. Cruise-line transfers may operate for included excursions, but passengers should not assume that a general downtown shuttle will be available.

Taxis and app-based rides should be arranged in advance when possible because availability can be more limited than in a large city. Confirm the vessel’s exact docking point and all-aboard time before leaving.

Explore Historic Downtown Alton

Allow 2–3 hours for the compact downtown area. Visit Lincoln-Douglas Square, see the Miles Davis statue, browse the Broadway and Third Street commercial blocks and walk along the riverfront. This is the easiest independent option, although reaching the upper streets requires an uphill walk.

National Great Rivers Museum and Melvin Price Locks and Dam

This river-focused museum is southeast of downtown and requires a taxi, arranged transfer or excursion. Its interactive exhibits explain Mississippi River navigation, ecology and commerce. Free public lock-and-dam tours may be offered at set times, but schedules, capacity and security requirements should be checked before visiting. Allow about 2–3 hours including transportation.

Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway

A scenic drive north from Alton follows the Mississippi beneath limestone bluffs toward Elsah, Grafton and Pere Marquette State Park. The byway continues for approximately 40 km (24.9 mi) from Alton to the state park. A cruise excursion, private driver or prearranged rental car is the practical choice; the route is not suitable as a casual port-day walk.

Grafton and Pere Marquette State Park

Grafton offers river views, small shops and seasonal visitor activities, while Pere Marquette State Park has overlooks and hiking trails. Allow at least 4–5 hours for a combined outing. An organized excursion or private vehicle is recommended because independent transport back to Alton may be difficult to obtain at short notice.

Alton’s Abolition and Civil Rights Sites

The Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument, Lincoln-Douglas Square and other local sites reflect Alton’s role in the abolitionist movement. The Lovejoy Monument stands in Alton Cemetery above downtown and involves a substantial uphill approach. It is best reached by taxi or as part of a guided local tour, especially for passengers with limited mobility.

Easy Riverfront and Lower Downtown Walk

1. Start near Alton Marina and walk through Riverfront Park.
2. Pause for views of the Mississippi River and Clark Bridge.
3. Continue toward the Alton Visitor Center on Piasa Street.
4. Walk to Lincoln-Douglas Square at Broadway and Landmarks Boulevard.
5. Follow Broadway through the historic commercial district.
6. Turn toward Third Street and visit the Miles Davis statue.
7. Return downhill to the riverfront and vessel.

Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: about 35–45 minutes. Recommended time: 1.5–2.5 hours with sightseeing, shops or refreshments. Difficulty: easy to moderate; mostly paved, with traffic crossings and a gradual climb away from the river.

Moderate Downtown and Lovejoy Monument Walk

1. Follow the lower downtown route to Lincoln-Douglas Square.
2. Continue through the Third Street commercial district.
3. Climb toward Alton Cemetery at Fifth and Monument streets.
4. Visit the Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument and river overlook.
5. Return through downtown to the riverfront.

Distance: approximately 4.5 km (2.8 mi). Pure walking time: about 70–90 minutes. Recommended time: 2.5–3.5 hours. Difficulty: moderate to strenuous because of steep streets and sustained uphill sections. A taxi for the uphill journey is a sensible alternative.

• Wear supportive shoes; downtown sidewalks are paved, but slopes can be demanding.
• Check opening days before planning around a museum, gallery or specialist shop.
• Summer calls can be hot and humid, while exposed riverfront sections offer limited shade.
• Winter is the principal bald-eagle-viewing season around the locks and open stretches of river.
• For Grafton, Pere Marquette State Park or the scenic byway, use an organized or prearranged round trip.
• Allow at least 30–45 minutes of margin before all-aboard time, and more when returning by road from outside Alton.
