Amelia Island FL (Fernandina Beach port locode USFEB) is one of the USA's few unspoiled island paradises. It is located in the southernmost Atlantic coast (East Coast USA) barrier islands, stretching from North Carolina down to Florida. Fernandina Beach (population around 12,000) is Florida's northernmost city and part of Greater Jacksonville (metro).
Island's rich history, lush, natural setting, uncrowded beaches, moss-covered oaks, unparalleled vacation experience (boating, fishing, golfing), stunning sunrises and sunsets, and the friendly "locals" make Amelia Island more than just a leisure travel destination. Fernandina Beach is the birthplace of the contemporary shrimping industry and most days shrimp boats depart from its docks. The 50-block historic district features classic Victorian-style architecture. Florida's oldest saloon is on Centre Street. Another must-see landmark is Fort Clinch (built before the Civil War).
The island was first settled in 1735 by the British soldier James Edward Oglethorpe (1696-1785) and became part of East Florida (then Spanish territory) in 1783. In 1821 it was ceded to the USA with the rest of the state. The island has a total of 7 premium golf courses. The resort Omni at Amelia has 3 - Long Point, Oakmarsh and Ocean Links. Island's Golf Club is at the Summer Beach Resort. Amelia River Golf Club is nearby, as well as Fernandina Beach Golf Club.
As cruise port destination, Amelia Island FL is included in the schedule of the USA's largest river cruise company - ACL-American Cruise Lines. The next tables show the company's 7-day itineraries as riverport sequences and prices per person (double occupancy).

Amelia Island Florida cruise terminal
Cruise ships to Amelia Island dock (anchor) at Fernandina Beach - port town on the northwestern coast.
Amelia Island calls normally place passengers at or near Fernandina Harbor Marina, immediately beside the historic center of Fernandina Beach. Small coastal ships may dock, while other calls may involve anchoring and a short tender transfer. Confirm the ship’s landing point and final tender time before going ashore.
Independent sightseeing: Easy for downtown Fernandina Beach. The waterfront, Centre Street, historic buildings, shops and several museums are within comfortable walking distance. Fort Clinch, Atlantic beaches and other parts of the island require a taxi, cruise excursion or prearranged transport.
Getting from the Cruise Port
- Fernandina Harbor Marina: Centre Street begins beside the marina, so no shuttle is normally needed for downtown sightseeing.
- Alternative landing arrangements: The exact berth or tender point can vary. Follow the ship’s instructions rather than relying solely on the mapped port location.
- Taxis and rideshares: Useful for Fort Clinch, Main Beach and attractions beyond downtown. Availability may be limited when several activities finish together, so allow time for the return.
- Public transport: NassauTRANSIT serves the county, but its limited routes are less convenient than a taxi for a short cruise call.
- Trolley tours: Narrated tours commonly depart near the waterfront and cover downtown, Old Town and residential districts. Schedules vary and should be checked after arrival or reserved in advance.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Historic Fernandina Beach
Allow 2–4 hours. This is the easiest independent option. Walk along Centre Street past Victorian commercial buildings, local shops and restaurants, then explore the quieter residential streets south of downtown. The Amelia Island Museum of History, housed in a former county jail, is about 0.6 km (0.4 mi) from the marina.
Fort Clinch State Park
Allow 2.5–4 hours, including transport. The preserved 19th-century fort overlooks Cumberland Sound and is surrounded by maritime forest, trails and shoreline. Use a taxi, rideshare or organized excursion. The park entrance is roughly 4 km (2.5 mi) from downtown, but the fort itself lies several additional miles inside the park, making the complete journey impractical on foot.
Amelia River Wildlife Cruise
Allow about 2–3 hours. Boat trips departing from Fernandina Harbor may explore the Amelia River, Cumberland Sound and waters near Cumberland Island, with possible views of dolphins, shorebirds, Fort Clinch and wild horses in the distance. This is practical independently when the departure and return times fit the ship’s call. Reserve ahead and confirm the boarding location.
Main Beach Park
Allow 2–3 hours. Main Beach is on the Atlantic side of the island, approximately 3.5 km (2.2 mi) from the marina. A taxi or rideshare is preferable to walking, especially in hot or humid weather. Facilities and nearby food options make it the most straightforward beach choice for a short visit.
Trolley or Island Highlights Tour
Allow 1.5–3 hours. A narrated trolley or cruise-organized tour is useful for passengers who want to see more than the compact downtown area without arranging several taxi journeys. Routes may include Old Town, Victorian neighborhoods and the island’s north end, but operating times are not guaranteed for every port call.
Self-Guided Historic District Walk
Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: about 35–45 minutes. Recommended total time: 2–3 hours. Difficulty: Easy; mostly flat sidewalks, with occasional uneven paving and railway crossings near the waterfront.
- Fernandina Harbor Marina: Begin at the working waterfront and look across the Amelia River before entering Centre Street.
- Centre Street: Walk east through the main commercial district, passing restored storefronts, shops and the historic Palace Saloon exterior.
- Historic Nassau County Courthouse: Turn south toward the late-19th-century courthouse at Centre and Fifth streets.
- Amelia Island Museum of History: Continue to South Third Street. Allow additional time if visiting the exhibits.
- Victorian residential streets: Walk through the blocks around Ash, Cedar, South Sixth and South Seventh streets to see historic houses and tree-lined streets.
- Centre Street return: Rejoin Centre Street for refreshments or shopping.
- Waterfront: Finish beside the marina, keeping the ship or tender landing within sight for an uncomplicated return.
The route can be shortened by returning directly from the museum to the marina. It is suitable for most passengers, although summer heat and thunderstorms can make even a short walk tiring.
Nature and Longer Excursions
Egans Creek Greenway
The greenway offers grass-covered trails through wetlands where birds and other wildlife may be seen. Trailheads are outside the central waterfront area, so transport and suitable footwear are advisable. Choose this only if the ship remains in port long enough for a relaxed return.
Cumberland Island
Cumberland Island National Seashore lies across the state line in Georgia. Visiting it on foot usually requires a ferry from St. Marys, advance planning and substantial travel time, so it is generally unsuitable as an improvised cruise-day trip. A local sightseeing cruise that views its shoreline from the water is considerably more practical.
Practical Tips
- Downtown is compact, but Fort Clinch and the Atlantic beaches are not beside the cruise landing.
- Confirm attraction hours and boat-tour departures, particularly on Sundays and during quieter seasons.
- Bring sun protection and water. Summer conditions can be hot, humid and stormy, with little shade along parts of the waterfront.
- Reserve return transport before leaving Fort Clinch or a quieter beach area if taxi availability appears limited.
- Allow at least 30–45 minutes beyond the expected travel time when returning from locations outside downtown. Tender passengers should follow the ship’s stated final-tender deadline.
