The compact historic center is easy to explore independently, but the best beaches, swimming spots and scenery require a boat trip. Larger cruise ships normally anchor offshore and tender passengers to the centrally located Santa Luzia Pier; small vessels may berth there directly.

Getting from the Cruise Port

• Tender landing: Passengers generally arrive at Santa Luzia Pier, beside the historic center and local boat-tour departure points.
• Walking: Shops, cafés, churches and central squares are within a few minutes of the pier. No shuttle is normally needed for the town center.
• Boat trips: Schooners and speedboats commonly depart from Santa Luzia Pier, but departure times and itineraries vary. Confirm that any independent trip fits the ship’s tender schedule.
• Taxis and local transport: Use a taxi or app-based ride for mainland beaches and attractions outside the center. Local buses serve the wider municipality but are less convenient during a short port call.
• Mobility: Tender boarding may be difficult for passengers with reduced mobility, especially when sea conditions are unsettled.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Island and Swimming Boat Trip

This is the strongest choice for most visitors. Half-day and longer trips explore islands, sheltered coves and snorkeling areas around Angra Bay and Ilha Grande. Possible stops may include Cataguases Island, Botinas Islands, Lagoa Azul or beaches on Ilha Grande, but routes depend on the operator and weather.

Allow about 5–7 hours for a multi-stop trip. A cruise-line excursion or a pre-arranged local operator with a clearly stated return time is preferable. Standard shared tours may depart too late or return too close to the ship’s final tender.

Historic Center

The center offers a relaxed alternative when the call is short or boat conditions are poor. From Santa Luzia Pier, visitors can walk among colonial churches, small squares, local shops and the waterfront. Highlights include Santa Luzia Church, the Carmo Church and Convent, Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church and the ruins of São Bernardino de Sena Convent.

Allow 1.5–3 hours. The area is compact and generally easy to explore independently, although some pavements are uneven and the convent ruins require an uphill approach.

Ilha Grande and Vila do Abraão

Regular and fast boats connect Angra dos Reis with Vila do Abraão, the main settlement on car-free Ilha Grande. The crossing commonly takes about 30–40 minutes each way, depending on the vessel and conditions.

Although the transfer is straightforward, using ordinary public departures independently can be risky during a cruise call because schedules may not align with the ship. Choose an organized excursion or a carefully timed private transfer. A brief visit can combine Abraão village with a nearby beach, but more distant island trails and Lopes Mendes Beach require considerably more time.

Mainland Beach Visit

Praia Grande and other beaches along the mainland coast can be reached by taxi or app-based ride. This works best for passengers wanting a simple swim without committing to a long boat excursion. Arrange the return in advance, since transport may be less readily available away from the center. Beach conditions and water quality can vary after heavy rain.

Self-Guided Historic Center Walk

Route: Santa Luzia Pier → Santa Luzia Church → Praça General Osório and the Carmo complex → Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church → Bica da Carioca → São Bernardino de Sena Convent ruins → return through the center to the pier.

Distance: Approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: about 40–50 minutes. Recommended total time: 1.5–2.5 hours. Difficulty: Easy to moderate.

1. Santa Luzia Pier: Begin at the tender landing and walk directly into the historic center.
2. Santa Luzia Church: See one of the central district’s small colonial churches.
3. Praça General Osório and the Carmo complex: Continue to the square beside the historic Carmelite church and convent.
4. Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church: Visit the city’s principal historic church if it is open.
5. Bica da Carioca: Walk inland to this historic public fountain.
6. São Bernardino de Sena ruins: Finish with the uphill approach to the former Franciscan complex and its elevated surroundings.
7. Return: Descend through the commercial center to Santa Luzia Pier, allowing extra time if a tender queue has formed.

The central streets are mostly manageable, but expect heat, occasional uneven paving and an incline near the convent ruins. Passengers wanting an easier route can omit the final uphill section.

Practical Tips

• For a tender call, allow additional time both for going ashore and returning to the ship.
• Do not rely on a shared boat tour unless its confirmed return leaves a substantial margin before the final tender.
• Sea conditions can change boat routes, swimming stops and transfer times.
• Bring sun protection, drinking water and suitable footwear; lightweight water shoes are useful on boat trips.
