The immediate surroundings are best suited to an easy waterside walk; reaching Antoing town or larger attractions requires more time and planning.

Getting from the Mooring

Small hotel barges normally moor in the Péronnes-lez-Antoing area, close to the marina or canal. There may be no staffed passenger terminal, shuttle service or taxi rank beside the vessel. Confirm the exact gangway location with the crew before setting out, as moorings can vary.

Antoing town center and its castle are separate from the Grand Large. Walking there is possible only for passengers with sufficient time, but it is not the most practical choice during a short evening or early-morning stop. Arrange a taxi in advance if you want to visit the town.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Walk beside the Grand Large and Canal

The easiest independent option is a walk around part of the 45-hectare Grand Large, a broad body of water bordered by woodland and open ground. The marina, canal banks and locks provide pleasant views of the local waterways.

• Difficulty: Easy, with mostly level waterside terrain.
• Practicality: Well suited to an evening arrival or a brief period ashore.

Complete the Grand Large Circuit

A longer local circuit follows the lake, marina and surrounding waterways. The established route is approximately 6.8 km (4.2 mi).

• Recommended total time: 2–2.5 hours.
• Difficulty: Easy to moderate because of the distance; largely flat.
• Limitation: Attempt the complete loop only in daylight and when the ship’s departure time leaves a comfortable margin.

Explore Antoing Town

Antoing’s principal landmark is the Château des Princes de Ligne, a privately occupied castle overlooking the town. It is attractive from outside, but interior access is limited to scheduled guided visits rather than continuous public opening. Saint-Pierre Church and the small town center can be combined with the castle exterior.

This option is best with a prearranged taxi or a cruise-organized visit. Do not travel specifically for an interior castle tour without confirming that a visit operates during the call.

Visit Tournai on a Longer Call

Tournai offers substantially more sightseeing, including its cathedral, UNESCO-listed belfry and historic center. Direct trains connect Antoing station with Tournai in roughly 5–10 minutes, but passengers must first reach Antoing station from the barge mooring.

An independent visit is reasonable only during a long daytime call after checking current train times and arranging the transfer to the station. For the usual evening-to-morning stop, Tournai is generally impractical.

1. Start at the vessel’s gangway and identify the return point.
2. Walk toward the Péronnes marina.
3. Continue beside the Grand Large for views across the water.
4. Follow the canal-side path toward the locks.

6. Return to the vessel along the same route.

Organized Excursions

Regional itineraries may include coach visits to Château de Beloeil, local vineyards, Mons or other parts of Wallonia. These places are not within convenient walking distance of the Antoing mooring. An organized excursion is preferable when it is included in the cruise schedule, particularly when the vessel continues cruising while passengers are ashore.

Practical Tips

• Ask the crew where the vessel is moored and whether it will remain there while you are ashore.
• Carry a phone light for evening walks; canal paths may have limited lighting.
• Do not assume taxis will be waiting at this small mooring.
• Check train schedules on the day if considering Tournai.
