Easy independently. Arendal is a compact and highly walkable port of call. Ships normally berth at Batterikaien in the city center. When a ship anchors, tenders land at Pollen inner harbor, also directly beside the main sightseeing area. No shuttle is normally needed for exploring central Arendal.

The waterfront, Tyholmen old town, Trinity Church and the Fløyheia viewpoint can be combined comfortably in two to three hours. Allow more time for an island ferry or a trip to Raet National Park.

Getting from the Cruise Port

• Batterikaien: The cruise berth is beside the center, with Pollen harbor approximately 200 m (0.1 mi) away.
• At anchor: Tenders normally land at Pollen. Tender operations can reduce usable time ashore, so follow the ship's instructions for the final return boat.
• On foot: The waterfront and commercial center are mostly level and paved. Tyholmen has some slopes, while the Fløyheia viewpoint can be reached using a public glass elevator.
• Local transport: Buses leave from the central area for Tromøya and other parts of Arendal. Check current journeys in the AKT travel planner before leaving town.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Pollen and Tyholmen

Recommended time: 1.5–2.5 hours. Begin beside the ship or tender landing and walk around Pollen, Arendal's lively inner harbor. Continue into Tyholmen, the preserved old quarter, for narrow streets, historic wooden houses, the former town hall and views across the waterfront.

Trinity Church stands close to the old quarter and is easy to include, although interior access is generally limited to selected summer hours. Kløckers Hus town museum is another possible stop, but its opening times can be restricted.

Ride the Glass Elevator to Fløyheia

Recommended time: 30–60 minutes. The glass elevator through the hillside provides easy access to an elevated viewpoint over the town, harbor and surrounding islands. It combines well with a central walking tour and avoids most of the uphill climb. Short paths near the upper station may still include gradients.

Visit Merdø Island

Recommended time: 3–4 hours. In the main summer season, small passenger ferries leave from Pollen for the car-free island of Merdø. The crossing takes about 25 minutes. Visitors can walk among traditional houses, enjoy the coastal scenery and visit beaches; Merdøgaard Museum may be open during the summer holiday period.

This is practical independently only when the ferry timetable fits the port call. Services are seasonal and may be operated by different companies. Confirm the day's departures and make sure the return ticket is valid with the vessel you intend to use. Choose a return sailing that leaves ample time before all aboard.

See Hove and Spornes in Raet National Park

Recommended time: 3–4 hours. Hove and Spornes on Tromøya offer pine forest, rocky and pebble shoreline, swimming areas and several coastal trails. The area is roughly a 10-minute drive from central Arendal in light traffic.

A taxi is the simplest option during a limited cruise call. Bus 102 serves Tromøya, but the nearest practical stop and onward walk should be checked in the current AKT journey planner. Arrange the return carefully, especially on weekends or when bus service is infrequent. Coastal surfaces can be uneven and exposed to wind.

Choose an Archipelago or Coastal Excursion

A guided boat trip, scenic drive or organized visit to Raet National Park is useful for passengers who want to see more of the skerries and islands without coordinating local transport. Organized transport is also preferable for excursions extending well beyond Arendal, where travel time and return logistics become more important.

Self-Guided Arendal Walking Tour

Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: about 40 minutes. Recommended total time: 1.5–2.5 hours. Difficulty: Easy to moderate, mostly paved with gentle slopes and some uneven streets in Tyholmen.

1. Batterikaien or Pollen: Start at the cruise berth or tender landing and follow the edge of the inner harbor.
2. Pollen waterfront: Walk past the boats, shops and waterside buildings surrounding the harbor basin.
3. Tyholmen: Continue through the old quarter using Nedre Tyholmen and Øvre Tyholmen to see its closely grouped wooden houses.
4. Old Town Hall and Kløckers Hus: View the historic buildings from outside, or enter if they are open during the call.
5. Trinity Church: Stop at the prominent brick church above the central streets.
6. Glass Elevator: Take the elevator to Fløyheia for a panorama over Arendal and the archipelago.
7. Central streets and Pollen: Return downhill or by elevator, then walk through the shopping area to the waterfront.
8. Ship or tender pier: Follow the short waterfront route back to Batterikaien or Pollen.

The central part of the route can be shortened easily. Passengers avoiding slopes can remain around Pollen and lower Tyholmen, then use the glass elevator for the viewpoint.

Practical Tips

• Check seasonal opening times before planning an indoor visit; churches and small museums may not open throughout the cruise season.
• Confirm island-ferry and local-bus departures on the day rather than relying on an older timetable.
• Carry a payment card, as electronic payment is widely used in Norway.
• Weather can change quickly near the coast. Bring a light waterproof layer and suitable shoes for Tyholmen or coastal trails.
• For an independent island or national-park trip, plan to be back in central Arendal well before the ship's all-aboard time. Allow an additional margin when the ship is using tenders.
