Baubau (Murhum Port locode IDBUW) is a port city in Indonesia's Southeast Sulawesi province. The city is on Buton Island's southwestern coast and has population around 140,000.
Baubau (aka Bau-Bau) is the island's economic center and Southeast Sulawesi's second-largest, after Kendari. Baubau was also the capital (until 1955) of the Sultanate of Buton (1332-1960), and the seat of Eastern Sulawesi's colonial administration.
Pulau Buton (aka Butung, Boeton, Button) is a large island off southeast Sulawesi (Celebes Island, Indonesia). By land area (approx 11600 km2 / 4410 mi2), it is ranked the world's 129th and Indonesia's 19th largest island. Its total population is around 450,000.
With the same name (Buton), there is a smaller island (part of the Riau Archipelago) located west of Pulau Bintan.
Pulau Buton is largely covered by rainforest.
The island is popular among tourists for its abundant wildlife. This is also one of only two habitats (the other being Sulawesi Island) of the anoa buffalo. Pulau Buton has huge reserves of natural asphalt and other minerals.
