Biloxi is an excursion-oriented call rather than a walk-off downtown port. Visiting ships currently dock at the Popp’s Ferry Causeway Pier, well away from Biloxi’s principal waterfront sights. Cruise-line transportation is therefore the practical starting point for sightseeing, with Ocean Springs commonly featured as the main destination.

Getting from the Cruise Port

American Cruise Lines ships use the Causeway Pier near Popp’s Ferry. This is a quiet waterside location northwest of central Biloxi, not a conventional downtown cruise terminal. Do not plan to walk from the ship to the city’s main attractions.

Cruise-line buses provide the most practical connection, including transportation to Ocean Springs, approximately 8 km (5.0 mi) east of central Biloxi across Biloxi Bay. Confirm the day’s shuttle stops and return schedule aboard the ship before leaving. A taxi or rideshare can provide more flexibility, but availability near the pier should not be assumed for the return journey.

Explore Downtown Ocean Springs

Ocean Springs is the easiest place for relaxed independent exploration once delivered to the center. Its compact downtown has locally owned shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants clustered around Washington Avenue and Government Street. Allow 2–3 hours for a walk, refreshments and browsing.

The Walter Anderson Museum of Art is the principal cultural attraction. It focuses on the Mississippi Gulf Coast artist and his distinctive depictions of local plants, animals and island landscapes. Check the museum’s opening day and admission arrangements before relying on a visit.

Biloxi Lighthouse and Visitors Center

The Biloxi Lighthouse stands beside Beach Boulevard, with the Biloxi Visitors Center directly across the road. The center’s exhibits provide a useful introduction to the city and its hurricane history. Lighthouse access involves a confined spiral staircase and may be affected by weather, capacity or scheduled tour times.

Allow about 1–1.5 hours for the visitors center, lighthouse exterior and a short waterfront walk. This area is easy to explore on foot after a vehicle transfer, although crossing busy Beach Boulevard requires care.

Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum

This museum at Point Cadet explains Biloxi’s shrimping, oystering, fishing, boatbuilding and hurricane history. It is a strong choice for visitors who want regional context rather than casino or beach time. Allow approximately 1.5–2 hours and use arranged transport, taxi or rideshare.

Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art

The museum combines George Ohr’s unconventional pottery with a Frank Gehry-designed campus beneath mature live oaks. A visit normally takes 1–2 hours. It is east of central Biloxi and is best reached by vehicle or included as part of a guided city tour.

Beachfront and Seafood

Biloxi has a long public sand beach along Beach Boulevard. It works well for a waterfront stroll or short rest, although the Mississippi Sound is generally valued more for scenery than clear-water swimming. Choose a beach section close to your planned transport stop and allow extra time to cross the multilane road safely.

1. Begin at the cruise-bus drop-off in central Ocean Springs.
2. Walk along Washington Avenue through the principal shopping and dining district.
3. Visit the Walter Anderson Museum of Art if its hours fit the port call.
4. Continue toward the historic L&N Depot area.
5. Turn onto Government Street for galleries, boutiques and cafés.
6. Loop through the surrounding residential streets to see cottages and mature live oaks.
7. Return to the designated bus pickup point by Washington Avenue.

Note the exact pickup location before starting and return at least 20–30 minutes before the stated departure. Ocean Springs Beach and the harbor lie farther south; adding them substantially lengthens the walk and is better done only with ample time or local transport.

When an Organized Excursion Is Preferable

A guided excursion is useful for combining several dispersed sites, such as the Biloxi Lighthouse, Ohr-O’Keefe Museum, Point Cadet and Ocean Springs. It also removes uncertainty about transportation back to the remote docking pier.

Ship Island is reached by ferry from neighboring Gulfport rather than directly from the cruise berth. The ferry journey, transfer to Gulfport and time on the island require much of a day, so it is practical only when specifically coordinated with the ship’s schedule.

Practical Tips

• Verify the ship’s transportation plan before going ashore; docking and shuttle arrangements may change.
• Do not rely on walking from the Causeway Pier or finding a waiting taxi there.
• Heat, humidity and thunderstorms can make even short walks tiring; carry water and sun protection.
• Beach Boulevard is broad and busy. Use marked pedestrian crossings.
• If traveling independently, arrange the return ride in advance and leave a generous margin for traffic and pier access.
