Brandys nad Labem-Stara Boleslav (Brandeis-Altbunzlau) is an Elbe River cruise port and town in Czech Republic's Central Bohemian Region, with a population of around 20,000. The town is located approx 25 km (16 mi) northeast from the country's capital city Prague and is also part of Greater Prague (metro area).
The town actually combines two formerly separated towns - Brandys nad Labem (on Elbe's west bank) and Stara Boleslav (on river's east bank). The settlement was founded in the mid-13th-century and initially named "Boleslav" - after Boleslaus I the Cruel (aka Boleslav I, 915-972, reign as Duke of Bohemia between 935-972), who in the early-10th-century built here a castle. Boleslav I was of the House of Premyslid - Czech royal dynasty reigning the Duchy/Kingdom of Bohemia in the period 867-1306).
In 1960, the adjacent towns (Brandys nad Labem and Stara Boleslav) were administratively united. By population (around 20,000), Brandys-Boleslav is the country's second-largest dvojmestí (double town) - after Frydek-Mistek (Moravian-Silesian Region, eastern Czech Republic) which has a population of over 55,000.
Stara Boleslav is a historical town (surrounded by stone ramparts) and Central Bohemia's oldest pilgrimage site. The town is best known for the murder in 935 of Prince Wenceslas I (Vaclav I, 907-935) by his younger brother Boleslav. After his death, Saint Wenceslas became Czech's patron saint. A basilica dedicated to St Wenceslas was built in 1039 by Bretislav I (aka Bohemian Achilles, 1002-1055) at the site of Vaclav's murder (since then - a pilgrimage site). Since 2003, the St Wenceslas National Pilgrimage to Stara Boleslav is the country's largest celebration of St Wenceslas Day (September 28).

Brandýs nad Labem–Stará Boleslav is a compact double town divided by the Elbe River. Its principal sights are the Renaissance castle in Brandýs and the churches associated with Saint Wenceslas in Stará Boleslav. Independent sightseeing is easy with sufficient time, although very short river-cruise stops may be operational calls rather than opportunities to go ashore.

Getting from the River
River vessels use local landing places rather than a large passenger terminal, and the exact berth can vary. Confirm the landing point and all-aboard time on the ship before setting out. If passengers disembark near the central bridge, both Brandýs Castle and Stará Boleslav can be explored on foot.
Taxis may be limited compared with a major city, while local buses are more useful for regional travel than for sightseeing within the compact center. A taxi or prearranged transfer is sensible only if the vessel uses a landing away from town.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Brandýs Castle and Old Town
Allow 60–90 minutes for the castle exterior, courtyard, garden surroundings and Masaryk Square. The Renaissance castle stands above the Elbe beside the historic river crossing. Interior access is normally by scheduled tour, so check locally before committing limited shore time.
Stará Boleslav Pilgrimage Quarter
Allow 60–90 minutes to see the Basilica of Saint Wenceslas, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the compact historic streets around Mariánské Square. The basilica marks the traditional site connected with the death of Saint Wenceslas, the Czech patron saint. Church interiors may have restricted access outside services, pilgrimages or arranged visits.
Elbe Riverside
For a shorter and less demanding outing, combine the riverbank, bridge views and castle exterior. This works well when there is insufficient time for both town centers or when an attraction is closed.
Self-Guided Walk Across the Double Town
Distance: approximately 3.5–4.5 km (2.2–2.8 mi), depending on the landing place and return route. Pure walking time: about 50–65 minutes. Recommended total time: 2–3 hours. Difficulty: easy to moderate, mainly level with ordinary pavements and a modest incline around the castle.
- River landing or central bridge: establish the exact return point before leaving the vessel.
- Brandýs Castle: view the castle, courtyard and riverside setting.
- Masaryk Square: walk through the historic center of Brandýs.
- Elbe crossing: cross the bridge toward Stará Boleslav.
- Mariánské Square: enter the older pilgrimage quarter.
- Church of the Assumption: see the prominent Baroque pilgrimage church and surrounding buildings.
- Basilica of Saint Wenceslas: continue to the town’s principal historic landmark.
- Return: retrace the route across the bridge to the ship, allowing extra time to locate the landing place.
If shore time is under 90 minutes, remain on the Brandýs side and limit the walk to the castle, square and riverfront.
Longer Excursions
Prague requires a road transfer and should be considered only when the cruise line provides a dedicated excursion and the call is long enough. Independent travel consumes too much of a short visit and introduces unnecessary traffic and return-to-ship risk. Nearby countryside or additional Central Bohemian sites are likewise better handled by a prearranged tour.

- Verify castle-tour and church access on the day, as opening arrangements can be seasonal or event-dependent.
