Brava Island (Furna, Cape Verde)

Independent with some planning or transport. Brava is a small, mountainous island with limited tourist infrastructure. Cruise visits normally use Furna, the island’s main harbor, but the exact landing method and passenger exit can vary by ship. Follow the onboard instructions for your call.

Furna itself is small. The main sightseeing base is Nova Sintra, approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) away and high above the harbor. Local passenger vans known as aluguers and a limited number of taxis usually provide transport, but departures may not follow a fixed timetable. Prearranged transport or a ship excursion is preferable for an island circuit.

Getting from Furna Harbor

• Nova Sintra: Approximately 10–15 minutes by vehicle, depending on stops and road conditions.
• Walking: Possible, but the road climbs steeply from sea level toward Nova Sintra. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes each way and avoid attempting it in strong heat unless you are fit.
• Aluguer: Shared local vans are the usual public transport. They may wait for passengers before departing, so allow flexibility.
• Taxi or private vehicle: The most practical choice for combining Nova Sintra, mountain villages and Fajã d’Água during one call.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Nova Sintra

Allow 1.5–2.5 hours, plus transfers. The compact island capital has cobbled streets, traditional houses, gardens and ocean viewpoints. Walk around Eugénio Tavares Square, see the exterior of the poet’s former home and explore the surrounding lanes at an unhurried pace.

This is the easiest independent option once transport from Furna has been arranged. Streets can be uneven, and the town’s elevated setting means some slopes.

Take a Scenic Island Drive

Allow approximately 3–5 hours. A private driver or organized excursion can combine Nova Sintra with Cova Rodela viewpoints, the agricultural interior, Nossa Senhora do Monte and Fajã d’Água. Brava’s narrow, winding roads and irregular public transport make a dedicated vehicle much more efficient than assembling the route independently.

Visit Fajã d’Água

Allow 3–4 hours from Furna, including road transfers and time in the village. Fajã d’Água occupies a dramatic bay on Brava’s west coast and is known for its fishing-village scenery and volcanic rock pools.

Swimming at Poça Preta should be considered only when the sea is calm. Atlantic swell can make rock-pool access and entry dangerous, and there may be no lifeguard. This is not a conventional sandy-beach destination.

Choose a Guided Mountain Walk

Brava has excellent hiking terrain, but routes commonly involve steep cobbled paths, large elevation changes and limited signage. A local guide is recommended for Monte Fontainhas, Monte Vigía and village-to-coast trails, particularly when cloud or mist covers the higher ground.

The approximately 7.6 km (4.7 mi) route from Nova Sintra toward Fajã d’Água can take around 3.5–4 hours of walking and descends substantially. It is suitable only for a long call with a guide and confirmed vehicle transport back to Furna.

Self-Guided Walk in Nova Sintra

Town Center and Viewpoints

Start: Your aluguer or taxi drop-off near Eugénio Tavares Square.

Route: Eugénio Tavares Square → Brava Museum or former Eugénio Tavares house exterior → nearby church → traditional residential streets → garden-lined lanes → an accessible town-edge viewpoint → return to the square.

Distance: Approximately 1.5–2 km (0.9–1.2 mi).

Walking time: About 30–40 minutes without stops; allow 1.5–2 hours for photographs and exploration.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Expect cobblestones, uneven paving and short slopes. Return to the agreed pickup point rather than relying on finding immediate transport elsewhere in town.

Practical Tips

• Carry cash in Cape Verdean escudos or confirm accepted payment before entering a taxi or aluguer.
• Agree on the fare, itinerary, waiting time and return pickup before beginning a private island tour.
• Bring sturdy footwear, water and sun protection. Higher parts of Brava can be cooler, windy or misty even when Furna is sunny.
• Do not plan an independent hike with a tight schedule unless return transport has been secured in advance.
• Allow a return margin of at least 60–90 minutes, with additional time if the call uses tender boats or other ship-to-shore transfers.
• Schedules, vehicle availability and sea conditions can change, so reconfirm the ship’s final boarding time before leaving Furna.
