Buffalo NY (New York, Lake Erie)

Buffalo is a Lake Erie port city in Erie County, New York, USA, ranked by population (around 280,000) the state's second-largest, following NYC. It lies on the lake's eastern shore and at the head of the Niagara River, on the USA-Canada border.

Buffalo NY is a new (2026-introduced) Great Lakes cruise port offering a mix of waterfront attractions, historic architecture, and easy access to the Niagara Falls.

Cruise ships currently use temporary docking facilities at Canalside. The construction of a dedicated cruise terminal (Buffalo Cruise Terminal) at the Outer Harbor started in 2026 and is scheduled for completion in 2028. This Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation infrastructure development project was confirmed in July, with Phase I officially initiated in August (2026).

When completed, the Buffalo Cruise Terminal will establish Buffalo NY as both a port of call and a turnaround/homeport.

Ships docking at Canalside place passengers within walking distance of downtown. The waterfront is clean, attractive, and easy to navigate, making arrival straightforward. Staff and volunteers are typically available to provide visitor information during cruise calls.

Buffalo's current cruise ship facilities are temporary and not purpose-built. Basic passenger services are available, but amenities such as dedicated baggage handling, customs facilities, and spacious terminals are limited.

As a cruise destination, Buffalo NY was officially introduced on May 28th, 2026, with American Cruise Lines/ACL's ship American Patriot.

In 2026, ACL offered two main itineraries visiting Buffalo NY - the 9-Day "Great Lakes & Thousand Islands Cruise", and the 14-Day "American Great Lakes Cruise", both sailing on American Patriot.

• The Great Lakes & Thousand Islands Cruise route (between Syracuse and Buffalo) navigates the St Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, the Welland Canal, and Lake Erie, concluding with an excursion to Niagara Falls.
• The American Great Lakes route (between Buffalo and Milwaukee WI) starts in Buffalo and heads west, crossing three lakes (Erie, Huron, and Michigan).

One of Buffalo's biggest strengths is its walkable waterfront. Within a few minutes, arriving tourists can reach the Canalside entertainment district, the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park, several popular restaurants and breweries, waterfront boardwalks (paved pathways, accessible parking, ADA-friendly routes), the KeyBank Center, and downtown Buffalo. Most attractions are flat and accessible.

Popular cruise shore excursions organized from Buffalo are led by the Niagara Falls (~30-40 minutes), followed by Buffalo architecture- and food-themed city tours, visiting Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House and Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site

Buffalo offers excellent local dining, including authentic Buffalo wings, Beef on Weck sandwiches, craft breweries, waterfront patios, and fresh seafood, with food prices generally lower than in larger USA cities.

Transportation options include walking to downtown, rideshare services, taxis, and trains (Buffalo Metro Rail, a 6,5-mi/10-km-long light rail public transit system operated by NFTA/Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority).

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls are three waterfalls that span the USA-Canada border (New York-Ontario) - Horseshoe Falls (largest) is on the border, while the smaller ones (American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls) are in the USA. Buffalo NY is approx 27 km (17 mi) to the north of Port Colborne (Ontario Canada).

Niagara Falls follow the Niagara River (north/drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario) and have max height/vertical drop 51 m (160 ft). Every minute, 168000+ m3 of water goes over the waterfalls. The average annual flow per second is 6400+ m3.

The cities of Niagara Falls (Ontario) and Niagara Falls (New York) are interconnected via two bridges - Rainbow Bridge (open to non-commercial vehicle traffic and pedestrians) and Whirlpool Rapids Bridge (Niagara River's oldest).

Niagara River's first hydropower plant was built in 1881, generating electricity mainly for the local mills. Built between 1957-61, the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station (in Lewiston NY) uses 13 generators with max power output 2675 MW. With annual capacity 2,4 GW, this is New York state's largest electricity producer.

Every second, through the hydropower station pass ~1420 m3 (~380,000 US gallons) of water. Currently, 50-75% of the river's flow is diverted (via 4x tunnels) upstream from the waterfalls, passing through the turbine generators then returning to the river again (near Lake Ontario).

Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Generating Stations (in Niagara Falls ON) are owned by the Crown corporation Ontario Power Generation Inc. These two Canadian stations (Adam Beck 1, and Adam Beck 2) divert water from the Welland River (via Chippawa-Queenston Power Canal) into three tunnels (under Niagara Falls). Both stations have combined power output 1997 MW.

Niagara Falls' tourist season runs between April 1st and October 31st.
