Burg bei Magdeburg (port locode DEBBG) is an Elbe River cruise port and town in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state (Jerichower Land district) with population around 24,000. The riverport is on the Elbe-Havel Kanal (northeastern Germany), located approx 25 km (16 mi) northeast of Magdeburg (state's capital city) and approx 100 km (60 mi) northeast from Berlin (Germany's capital). Elbe River forms the town's northwestern boundary.
The settlement was founded in early-10th-century around a castle. In mid-19th-century was built the 142-km long railway linking Burg with Magdeburg (Bahnstrecke Berlin-Magdeburg), with which started region's industrialization. In early-20th-century (statistical data for 1917), in the 1899-built slaughterhouse were slaughtered daily around 1,500 cattle, 1,200 calves, 10,000 pigs, 700 sheep and 150 horses.
Today, Burg is best-known for its well-preserved medieval buildings (towers and churches) and Europe's largest footwear manufacturer - Schuhfabrik Tack und Cie (founded 1883) - producing nearly 4,000 pairs of shoes daily. City's main landmarks are the fortified towers Freiheitsturm (16th-century), Hexenturm (11th-century) and Berlinerturm (14th-century), Wasserturm am Weinberg (1902-built water tower), Bahnhof Burg (1846-opened railway station), Stadtbibliothek Brigitte Reimann Burg (city library), Hainstrase 11-12 (mid-15th-century tannery), Burg Theater (Germany's oldest cinema still in operation), Town Hall (13th-century), Pieschelsche Anstalt (former orphanage / now senior center).
As a cruise port, Burg Germany is included in the regular schedule of one of Europe's largest river cruise companies - CroisiEurope.
The next table shows the company's 8-day cruisetour itinerary between homeports Prague and Berlin-Tegel, with prices from ~USD 2100 pp (double occupancy).

Burg is a small river-cruise stop on the Elbe-Havel Canal. Its old town, defensive towers and gardens suit a relaxed half-day visit. Magdeburg is a separate excursion requiring transport.
Independent with some planning or transport: Burg’s sights are manageable on foot once you reach the center, but confirm your ship’s landing place and the route into town before setting out.
Getting from the Cruise Landing
Burg has a passenger landing on Uferstraße beside the Elbe-Havel Canal. Confirm whether your ship uses this location; the canal landing should not be confused with the old-town sightseeing area. River vessels moor alongside rather than using offshore tenders.
Ask the crew for the pedestrian route, any arranged transfer and the exact return location. For passengers who want to conserve walking time, arrange a taxi into the center rather than assuming taxis or a shuttle will be waiting.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Old-town churches and towers
Allow approximately 2–3 hours in the center for the town hall, the twin-towered Unser Lieben Frauen church, Hexenturm and historic streets. St. Nicolai is another worthwhile stop if time permits. Independent exploration is straightforward, although the upper town involves slopes and some routes use steps. Treat church and tower interiors as optional, subject to access.
Parks, riverside gardens and views
For a quieter visit, spend 1–2 hours exploring the Ihlegärten beside the small River Ihle and the pond paths in Flickschupark. The Weinberg adds an elevated view over Burg and a close-up look at its landmark water tower, but requires an uphill approach. These places combine well with the old town; they are separate from the canal-side cruise landing.
Magdeburg excursion
Magdeburg lies approximately 25 km (15.5 mi) southwest of Burg. Focus a visit on the cathedral area and the colorful Grüne Zitadelle rather than attempting the whole city.
Organized excursion recommended for a short call. An excursion or prearranged driver simplifies the journey and return. Regional rail is an independent alternative, but requires reaching Burg station, checking current services and allowing for the onward journey within Magdeburg. Reserve at least half a day overall and obtain a current transfer estimate before committing.
Self-Guided Walking Route
Gardens and Towers Circuit — Moderate
Start and finish: Burg railway station, after reaching it from the ship. This circuit is approximately 5 km (3.1 mi), with around 75–90 minutes of pure walking. Allow 3–4 hours with sightseeing stops, plus the journey between the landing and station.
- Goethepark: Begin with the landscaped paths near the station.
- Weinberg and water tower: Continue via Kirchhofstraße and Kreuzgang for views over the Ihle and old town.
- Ihlegärten: Descend toward Hainstraße and the historic tannery building; enter only if access has been confirmed.
- Town hall and Unser Lieben Frauen: Follow Breiter Weg into the upper town.
- Hexenturm: Continue along Turmstraße to the defensive tower.
- Flickschupark: Walk to the pond and garden paths before returning toward the station.
The circuit includes uphill sections and steps around the Weinberg. For a shorter, gentler visit, concentrate on the Ihlegärten and Flickschupark instead. Arrange your return to the landing separately; finishing at the station does not put you back beside the ship.
Practical Return Tips
- Confirm the all-aboard time and whether the ship remains at the same landing during excursions.
- For local sightseeing, plan to reach the landing at least 30 minutes before all-aboard.
- For Magdeburg, allow a larger margin for traffic or rail disruption and avoid relying on the last possible return connection.
- Check interior access before making a museum, church or tower the main purpose of your visit.
