Busuanga Island is the biggest in the Calamian Group (Palawan, Philippines) and the province's second largest - after Palawan Island. It is located halfway between the islands of Mindoro and Palawan, with the South China Sea to the west and the Sulu Sea to the southeast.

To the south of Busuanga are the islands Coron and Culion.

The western 1/3 of the island is under the Busuanga municipality, while the eastern 2/3s belong to the Coron municipality.

Busuanga is famous as a diving location. Near the end of World War II (1939-1945), the US Navy bombed and sank a Japanese ship. Its wrecks lie in Coron Bay - a natural anchorage close to the town of Coron.

Nearby Coron Island boasts the beautiful Barracuda and Kayangan lakes. Barracuda is known for its fabled gigantic barracudas and thermoclines.

Siete Pecados is one of the best places to snorkel in Coron. It is popularized by the shoot of a local TV show of a mermaid love story. Travelers can experience swimming in an aquarium, a great variety of fishes and beautiful corals. Recommended time to snorkel is between 1-2 PM. The current is strong in the morning.

Busuanga is Palawan's "miniature version" with smaller islands in close range. The resorts can arrange boat rental. A good idea is to head down to Coron's Market Pier and get a boat captain. Boats handle around 6 passengers.

On its way to Puerto Princesa, SuperFerry calls at Coron. It leaves Manila every Friday afternoon and arrives early Saturday morning in Coron.

Travel 2go provides a bunk bed ferry from Manila and from Puerto Princesa to Coron.

Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on Calauit Island on Busuanga's North side. The reserve was created by Presidential decree in 1976 and houses a variety of African species wandering in the wild.

Maquinit Hot Spring is a beautiful place to hang out. It takes 20 minutes from Coron town market, and costs 300-400 Pesos, depending on the number of passengers and how long they stay. There is an entrance fee. The hot springs comprise 3 areas - the two smaller circular areas are the warmest (above 40 C), and the third larger area is 36 C.

Other activities can be arranged at the Discovery Bar. These include mountain bike tours, horseback riding, jungle treks.

Busuanga Island Philippines cruise terminal

Most cruise ships to Busuanga Island dock (anchor) at Coron Bay near Coron - port town on the east-southern coast. Some ships may dock at Busuanga - port town on the island's western coast.

At a Glance

Independent with some planning or transport. Most cruise calls anchor in Coron Bay, with passengers transferred ashore by tender. Coron Town is easy to explore independently, but the destination’s best-known lakes, lagoons, reefs and beaches are reached by boat. A pre-arranged ship excursion or private boat timed to the port call is the most practical choice.

Some itineraries use a landing point on the western side of Busuanga Island rather than Coron Town. Check the ship’s port information before making independent arrangements, as the two areas are far apart.

Getting from the Cruise Ship

Ships normally anchor offshore because Coron does not have a conventional cruise terminal for large vessels. Tender boats generally land near Coron Town’s waterfront, although the precise pier can vary.

  • On foot: The compact town center, waterfront, market area and lower streets are walkable from the usual landing area.
  • By tricycle: Motorized tricycles are the usual local transport for Mount Tapyas, Maquinit Hot Spring and short trips around town. Agree on the destination, waiting time and fare before departure.
  • By boat: Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, reefs and island beaches require a licensed local boat or organized excursion.

Allow additional time for tender queues in both directions. Sea conditions can also affect boat travel and the ship’s tender schedule.

Best Ways to Spend the Port Call

Coron Island Lakes, Lagoons and Snorkeling

This is the strongest choice for a first visit. Boat itineraries commonly combine two or more places such as Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, a reef or wreck-snorkeling site, and a small beach. Expect swimming, repeated boat boarding and some walking over uneven or wet surfaces.

Allow approximately 5–7 hours, depending on the route and sea conditions. For cruise passengers, use a ship excursion or a private tour with a clearly agreed return time. Standard shared tours may return too late for an early sailing.

Kayangan Lake

Kayangan Lake is reached by boat and then by a steep stairway over a limestone ridge. The climb rewards visitors with the familiar viewpoint over the bay before descending to the lake. It is unsuitable for passengers who have difficulty with numerous steps, heat or slippery surfaces.

Twin Lagoon

Twin Lagoon is primarily a swimming and kayaking stop surrounded by limestone cliffs. Access between the lagoons may involve swimming through a narrow opening or using steps, depending on the tide and local arrangements. It is normally combined with other Coron Island sites rather than visited alone.

Coron Town and Mount Tapyas

This is a practical independent alternative when the port call is short or boat conditions are poor. Coron Town itself is functional rather than a major sightseeing destination, but its waterfront, local streets and Mount Tapyas viewpoint make a worthwhile half-day combination.

The summit is reached by a long exposed staircase with more than 700 steps. Allow approximately 1.5–2.5 hours from town for the return walk, climb, rests and photographs. Carry water and avoid the hottest part of the day when possible.

Maquinit Hot Spring

These saltwater thermal pools sit among mangroves outside Coron Town. The journey usually takes about 20–30 minutes each way by tricycle or arranged vehicle, partly over rough roads. Allow 2–3 hours including transport and bathing. The water is naturally very hot, making this a less comfortable choice at midday.

Wreck Diving

Coron Bay is known for its World War II shipwrecks, but diving is not a casual shore activity. Certified divers should reserve through an established dive operator in advance and provide their certification level and recent diving experience. Site depth, currents and travel time vary considerably. Only book a dive schedule specifically designed around the ship’s all-aboard time.

Self-Guided Coron Town Walk

Easy Waterfront and Town Route

Route: tender landing area – waterfront promenade – public market area – central streets – San Agustin Parish Church – town plaza – waterfront.

Distance: approximately 2.5–3.5 km (1.6–2.2 mi). Pure walking time: about 45–60 minutes. Recommended time: 1.5–2 hours with stops. The route is mostly easy, although pavements can be uneven and traffic is busy on some streets.

This walk provides a look at everyday Coron but does not include a sandy beach or the limestone scenery for which the area is famous.

Moderate Town and Mount Tapyas Route

Route: tender landing area – town center – San Agustin Parish Church – Mount Tapyas entrance – summit viewpoint – return through town to the waterfront.

Distance: approximately 4–5 km (2.5–3.1 mi), plus the summit staircase. Pure walking time: about 1.5 hours. Recommended time: 2–3 hours. Difficulty is moderate to strenuous because of the long, exposed stair climb.

Return directly to the waterfront after descending, leaving additional time for the tender transfer. A tricycle can shorten the road portion but not the staircase.

Beaches and Nature

There is no convenient resort-style beach in central Coron Town. The attractive beaches seen in destination photographs are generally on nearby islands and require a boat. For a beach-focused day, choose an organized island-hopping trip or arrange a private boat that includes one or two swimming stops and a conservative return time.

Calauit Safari Park and the beaches of northern Busuanga are distant from Coron Town and consume much of a cruise day in road travel. They are best considered only during a long call and with organized transport. They may be more practical if the ship specifically lands on western Busuanga.

Practical Tips

  • Confirm whether the ship is tendering to Coron Town or using another Busuanga landing point.
  • Carry Philippine pesos; small transport operators and local vendors may not accept cards.
  • Bring sun protection, drinking water, swimwear, a towel and footwear suitable for wet steps.
  • Use a waterproof bag for phones, documents and other valuables during boat tours.
  • Passengers with limited mobility should check boat boarding and stair requirements before booking lake or lagoon excursions.
  • Do not rely on joining a normal full-day tour after arrival unless its return time is comfortably before the ship’s deadline.
  • Plan to reach the tender point well before the published last-tender time, allowing for traffic, boat delays and queues.
