Canouan is a small, quiet Grenadine island best suited to a beach visit, a short local walk or a pre-arranged boat trip. Cruise ships normally anchor offshore and transfer passengers by tender to the jetty at Charlestown beside Grand Bay. The village and nearby beach are easy to explore independently, but taxis or arranged transport are useful for the rest of the island.

Getting from the Cruise Port

For South Glossy Bay, viewpoints or a broader island circuit, look for a taxi near the wharf or arrange transport in advance. Minibuses serve local routes, but their frequency may not suit a short cruise call. Parts of northern Canouan form a private resort estate, so do not assume that every road, beach facility or hiking trail is freely accessible.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Charlestown and Grand Bay Beach

Recommended time: 2–3 hours. Independent sightseeing: Easy.

Walk through the compact village, see everyday island life and continue along Grand Bay, also called Charlestown Bay. Its long beach and generally sheltered water make this the simplest option for passengers who prefer to remain close to the tender landing. Facilities are modest, so bring water and confirm where food, restrooms or beach services are available before settling in.

South Glossy Bay

Recommended time: 3–4 hours. Independent sightseeing: Practical with arranged transport.

This attractive southern bay offers a quieter beach setting and views toward the southern Grenadines. Reaching it by taxi is more practical than walking in the heat. Arrange either a waiting driver or a specific collection time because taxis may not remain at the beach.

Scenic Island Drive

Recommended time: 2–3 hours. Independent sightseeing: Best with a local driver.

A taxi circuit can combine Charlestown, southern beaches and elevated coastal viewpoints. Ask the driver which places are currently accessible, particularly near the private estate. This is a good choice for passengers who want an overview without undertaking a long walk.

Tobago Cays Boat Excursion

Recommended time: Usually 4–6 hours. Organized excursion recommended.

The Tobago Cays Marine Park lies south of Canouan and is reached only by boat. Trips may include sailing, beaches and snorkeling around the protected reefs and small islands. Use a cruise-line excursion or a reputable operator that coordinates directly with the ship’s call. Sea conditions and the boat used can significantly affect journey time and comfort.

Mount Royal

Recommended time: Approximately half a day. Guided access recommended.

Mount Royal is Canouan’s highest point and offers wide island and reef views, but it lies within the private estate area. Access should be confirmed in advance, and the hike should be undertaken only with an authorized guide or arranged excursion. It is not a suitable spontaneous walk from the tender landing.

Self-Guided Charlestown and Grand Bay Walk

Distance: Approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi) return. Pure walking time: About 40 minutes. Recommended total time: 1.5–2.5 hours. Difficulty: Easy, although heat and limited shade can make the walk tiring.

1. Charlestown wharf: Begin at the tender landing and note the boarding location and final tender time.
2. Village center: Follow the local road through Charlestown, passing small shops and community buildings.
3. Grand Bay waterfront: Continue toward the bay for views of anchored yachts and the island’s sheltered western coast.
4. Grand Bay Beach: Walk along an accessible section of the sand or stop for a swim.
5. Charlestown wharf: Return by the same general route, allowing extra time if tender queues have formed.

Roads may have narrow or missing sidewalks. Wear sun protection, carry drinking water and watch for vehicles when walking through the village.
