Cayo Largo Island (officially Cayo Largo del Sur, translated as "Long Cay") is a small resort isle located off the south coast of mainland Cuba, northwest Caribbean Sea. To the west is located another popular vacation destination - the Cayo Rico Island - with its famous Playa Sirena beach.

Cayo Largo's length is 25 km (16 mi) and the island's width is just 3 km (1,9 mi). This is the 2nd largest island in Canarreos Archipelago and is part of Isla de la Juventud special municipality.

Cayo Largo del Sur's major tourist attractions are the west beaches, Playo Paraiso and Playa Sirena. These are approx 1 km apart, and people may easily walk between them whenever the tide is not full. Sirena boasts full-service tourist facilities. A shuttle "train" service takes travelers from the resorts to the beaches. Paraiso offers one of the world's finest undeveloped beaches. Travelers to Cayo Largo Island should be advised nudism is tolerated and practiced in designated areas on the periphery of the resorts, as well as on the many desolate stretches of beaches on the island.

Cayo Largo del Sur Cuba cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Cayo Largo Island dock (anchor) at Nueva Gerona - port town and main settlement on Isla de la Juventud the northern coast.

Cayo Largo del Sur is a small resort island rather than a conventional port town. Its main attractions are white-sand beaches, clear Caribbean water, sea turtles and boat trips to nearby cays. There is little urban sightseeing, and transport arrangements should be confirmed before leaving the ship.

At a Glance

  • Independent sightseeing: Possible with some planning and local transport.
  • Best independent option: Playa Sirena and Playa Paraíso.
  • Best organized option: A boat trip combining snorkeling with a nearby cay.
  • Walking: Suitable around the marina area, but not practical for exploring the whole island.
  • Main limitation: Cayo Largo has no conventional town center or extensive public transport network.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Cayo Largo is primarily served by its marina and sheltered anchorages. Depending on the vessel and sea conditions, passengers may arrive at Marina Marlin or be brought ashore by tender. Exact landing arrangements can vary, so check the ship’s instructions before making independent plans.

The marina is beside the small Pueblo Isla del Sol settlement and the Sea Turtle Rescue Center. Playa Sirena is approximately 2 km (1.2 mi) southwest of the marina, while the main resort zone lies farther east.

There is no regular urban bus system. Taxis, minibuses and tourist transport may operate, but availability and schedules can change. Do not rely on a resort shuttle unless the ship or local operator confirms that cruise passengers may use it.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Playa Sirena and Playa Paraíso

Allow about 3–5 hours for a relaxed beach visit. Playa Sirena is generally the more developed of the western beaches, with calm water and basic visitor facilities when operating. Playa Paraíso is quieter and has fewer services.

The beaches are roughly 1 km (0.6 mi) apart. Walking between them along the sand can be pleasant when tides and beach conditions permit, but soft sand makes the route more tiring than the distance suggests. Arrange transport from the marina and agree on a return time with the driver.

Sea Turtle Rescue Center

The rescue center stands beside Marina Marlin and is the easiest local attraction to combine with a marina arrival. A visit normally requires about 30–60 minutes. Exhibits and the number of turtles present vary by season and ongoing conservation work, so confirm that the center is open before depending on it as the main activity.

Snorkeling and Nearby Cays

Boat excursions from the marina may combine reef snorkeling with visits to places such as Cayo Rico or Cayo Iguana, where wildlife can include iguanas and seabirds. These trips are the best way to experience the surrounding Canarreos Archipelago.

Because departure times, weather conditions and return arrangements are important, an organized ship excursion or a prearranged local tour is preferable. Full-day trips may not fit shorter port calls.

Beach and Turtle Center Combination

For a call of around 5–7 hours ashore, visit the turtle center first and then take arranged transport to Playa Sirena or Playa Paraíso. This offers a useful nature stop without sacrificing most of the day to transfers.

Self-Guided Marina Walk

Easy: Marina and Pueblo Isla del Sol

Distance: Approximately 1–1.5 km (0.6–0.9 mi) round trip
Pure walking time: 20–30 minutes
Recommended total time: 1–1.5 hours
Difficulty: Easy, although heat and limited shade can make walking uncomfortable.

  1. Begin at the passenger landing area at Marina Marlin.
  2. Walk through the compact marina complex.
  3. Visit the adjacent Sea Turtle Rescue Center if open.
  4. Continue briefly through Pueblo Isla del Sol.
  5. Return directly to the marina and tender point.

This is a short local walk rather than a sightseeing tour. There are few conventional landmarks, shops or historic buildings. Carry water and avoid extending the walk along isolated roads in the midday heat.

Practical Tips

  • Confirm the landing point, last tender and local transport arrangements onboard.
  • Arrange return transport before settling at a remote beach.
  • Carry sun protection, water and any essential supplies; services away from the resorts can be limited.
  • Beach facilities, food outlets and transport may operate irregularly.
  • Sea conditions, erosion and seasonal weather can alter the width and accessibility of individual beaches.
  • Do not touch or remove starfish, coral, shells or other marine life.
  • Allow at least 60 minutes between returning to the marina area and the ship’s final boarding time, with additional margin when tenders are used.
