Bahia Culebra/Bay (port locode CRGDP) is in the north of the Gulf of Papagayo, Costa Rica. Culebra attracts tourists with its premium accommodations, exquisite white-sand beaches, warm and placid waters. It is often ranked among the world's best vacation travel destinations and top-rated locations for snorkeling, scuba diving, sport fishing, swimming.
Gulf of Papagayo (gulf of the parrot) is on Costa Rica's northwestern coast. Among the most popular resort tourism destinations are Ocotal Beach, Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, Playa Panama. Papagayo Project is one of Central America's largest resort tourism development projects ever. Construction works started in 1993 with the Government's approval.
The destination is often referred to as "mini-Cancun". Costa Rican national parks located within close proximity to Bahia Culebra are Santa Rosa NP, Rincon de la Vieja NP, Palo Verde NP. They can be visited via day-long boat excursions.
Culebra Bay is served by the Daniel Oduber Quiros Airport in Liberia (capital and largest city of the Guanacaste Province). Bus travel from San Jose (country's capital city) takes ~5 hours. Buses from both San Jose and Liberia run daily.
Superyachts and smaller-sized cruise ships often dock at Marina Papagayo.
Culebra is a call at Bahía Culebra and Marina Papagayo on Costa Rica’s Guanacaste coast. Beaches, a coastal boat trip or a visit to Playas del Coco are the most practical ways to spend time ashore. Independent sightseeing is possible with some planning and transport. This is a spread-out resort area rather than a town with attractions immediately outside the port.
Getting Ashore and Getting Around
Marina Papagayo accommodates yachts and smaller vessels. Confirm your ship’s arrangements before booking transport: the berth or tender landing determines where a driver or tour operator should meet you. Do not assume every Culebra call uses the same passenger exit.
For sightseeing beyond the marina, arrange a taxi or private transfer with a confirmed return pickup. Ask the ship or marina staff about transport available that day; do not count on a complimentary shuttle or taxis waiting at the landing.
Beaches across the bay can look close from the ship but require a drive around the shoreline or an arranged boat transfer. Walking along the access roads is not a useful sightseeing plan. Resort pools, beach clubs and internal transport should be booked or confirmed separately.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Relax at Playa Panamá or Playa Hermosa
Choose one beach for swimming, a shoreline stroll and lunch. Playa Panamá is a quieter bay setting, while Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste offers a beach framed by rocky headlands and places to eat nearby. Specify Guanacaste when arranging transport, as Costa Rica has other beaches called Playa Hermosa.
From Marina Papagayo, allow roughly 30–50 minutes each way depending on the beach and road conditions; confirm the estimate from your actual landing point. Plan around 3–4 hours overall, including transport. Walking is mostly flat but involves sand, and swimming depends on conditions that day.
Practical independently: yes, with a prearranged round-trip transfer. Agree on the exact pickup location before your driver leaves.
Visit Playas del Coco for Local Life and Lunch
Playas del Coco is a better choice for restaurants, souvenir browsing and a town atmosphere. Explore the main commercial street, the small church and plaza, then stroll along the beachfront promenade. The waterfront is useful for a relaxed walk and watching local boats.
Book a road transfer and ask for a journey estimate from your landing point. Allow approximately 4–5 hours overall, with 2–3 hours in town. Once dropped off near the waterfront, the central sights are easy to explore on foot.
Practical independently: yes, provided the return pickup is confirmed. For a shorter call, choose Coco or a beach rather than combining several stops.
Take a Guided Coastal Boat Trip
A boat outing around Culebra Bay and the Gulf of Papagayo can combine coastal scenery, a beach stop and snorkeling when conditions permit. This avoids driving between coastal locations, but the boarding point may require a separate transfer.
Choose a half-day outing compatible with the ship’s schedule. Confirm the meeting point, total duration, return time and whether boarding involves a dock, beach entry or a small transfer boat. Snorkeling visibility and stops depend on wind and sea conditions.
Organized excursion recommended: a ship excursion or an operator who explicitly accommodates cruise passengers and their return deadline.
Self-Guided Walking in Playas del Coco
Easy Town and Waterfront Route
Start: a prearranged drop-off near the central beachfront. This walk requires transport from the port.
- Begin at the waterfront park and look across the bay.
- Follow the beachfront promenade for views of the fishing and excursion boats.
- Return toward the central plaza for a shaded pause.
- Visit the small Catholic church nearby, if open.
- Browse the shops along the main commercial street and stop for refreshments or lunch.
- Return to the agreed waterfront pickup point.
Distance: approximately 1.5–2 km (0.9–1.2 mi), depending on browsing and the length of the waterfront walk. Pure walking time: 25–40 minutes. Recommended time: 1.5–2.5 hours including stops, plus port transfers.
Difficulty: easy and mostly flat. Expect uneven pavement, road crossings and exposed sections; walking onto the beach adds soft sand.
Practical Tips
- For a typical 7–8-hour call, choose one main outing and leave room for disembarkation and the return journey.
- Plan to reach the berth or tender landing at least an hour before the ship’s stated deadline, with extra margin for longer transfers or unsettled weather.
- Carry water, sun protection and insect repellent. Heat can make even a short walk tiring.
- Confirm beach access, toilets, food options and any resort day-use booking before departure.
- Inland volcano, waterfall and wildlife excursions require more travel and coordination. Choose one only when its complete itinerary fits the call comfortably.
