Bayan ng Currimao (port locode PHCMO) is a South China Sea port town and municipality in the Philippines' province of Ilocos Norte, with population around 13,000.
Currimao is approx 27 km (~17 mi) from the province's capital, Laoag, and approx 460 km (~290 mi) from the country's capital, Manila.
The Port is close (~3 km) to downtown Currimao, and serves both cargo and passenger/cruise ships.
In 2025, the Port completed major infrastructure upgrades, including reclamation, dredging (to deepen the harbor), and construction of breakwaters. Now, it can accommodate larger vessels with max LOA length 200 m (656 ft).
Currimao Port was included in the 2025-2026 schedule of the Star Cruises' ship Star Navigator.

Currimao is a gateway to the churches, sand dunes and towns of Ilocos Norte. Independent sightseeing is practical with prearranged transport; an organized excursion is recommended for a wider tour. Paoay and Laoag offer the most manageable sightseeing combinations for a typical 7–8-hour call. There is less to do immediately around the port.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Ships use Currimao Port, but docking or tendering arrangements depend on the vessel and conditions. Check your ship’s arrival information before arranging a pickup, particularly if you need to allow time for a tender ashore.
Currimao town center is approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) from the port. Laoag is farther inland, roughly 27 km (16.8 mi) from Currimao, and requires a road transfer. Do not treat either destination as a walk straight from the gangway.
For independent touring, arrange a car or van with a driver who will wait at each stop and return you to the correct passenger access point. Confirm any ship shuttle onboard; do not assume one operates to Laoag. Local public transport is less convenient for a short call involving several attractions.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Paoay Church and Paoay Lake
This is a manageable first visit, with relatively little walking. At Paoay Church, explore the grounds, photograph the massive exterior buttresses and enter the church when services and access permit. Allow 45–60 minutes for the church and surrounding square.
With a driver, continue to Malacañang of the North, a former presidential residence overlooking Paoay Lake. Check opening arrangements before including the interior. Allow approximately 3–4 hours for a relaxed outing from the port, including transfers and a refreshment stop. These are separate sites requiring transport between them.
Laoag’s Central Sights and Ilocano Food
Laoag suits passengers who want a compact city walk, a museum visit and lunch. Its central sights include Aurora Park, the Tobacco Monopoly Monument, the Sinking Bell Tower and St. William’s Cathedral. Museo Ilocos Norte is a useful optional stop if open.
Allow roughly 45–60 minutes each way for the road transfer, depending on traffic and your pickup point. A city visit with lunch can occupy 4–5 hours overall. With a full call and an early start, a driver can combine Laoag with Paoay Church; keep additional stops selective.
Paoay Sand Dunes
The dunes offer guided 4WD rides and sandboarding rather than a conventional sightseeing walk. Book the activity and return transport together, and allow around 3–4 hours overall, depending on the program. A church stop may be added if time permits.
Expect exposed sand, strong sun and jolting vehicle movements. Check the operator’s suitability advice if you have back or neck problems, limited mobility or difficulty boarding a high vehicle. Exploring the dunes alone on foot is not a practical substitute.
Currimao Coast and Pangil Rock Formations
For a quieter outing, arrange a local transfer to Currimao’s beachfront or Pangil’s coral rock formations. A 2–3-hour visit leaves more flexibility than an inland circuit. The coast is suitable for photographs and a short stroll; the rock formations involve sharp, uneven surfaces and conditions change with the tide.
If you prefer a beach resort, confirm day-visitor access, facilities and return pickup beforehand. Do not assume every stretch of shoreline is suitable for swimming. Avoid climbing on coral formations or entering rough water.
Self-Guided Walking Tour in Laoag
Easy Central Loop After a Road Transfer
Start: Aurora Park, with your driver’s return meeting point agreed. Allow approximately 1–1.5 km (0.6–0.9 mi), 20–30 minutes of pure walking and 1.5–2 hours including stops. The route is mostly flat, but heat, uneven paving and road crossings require attention.
- Aurora Park: Begin with the square and its central fountain.
- Tobacco Monopoly Monument: Make a short stop beside the park.
- Sinking Bell Tower: Continue to view the landmark from outside.
- St. William’s Cathedral: Visit respectfully if open and no service prevents sightseeing.
- Museo Ilocos Norte: Return toward the provincial capitol area for an optional museum visit.
- Aurora Park: Finish near your agreed pickup point, adding a café stop if time allows.
This walk begins in Laoag, not at the cruise port. Keep your driver’s contact details and retain enough time for the entire return transfer.
Longer Excursions and Return Planning
Vigan’s heritage streets are a separate, more distant destination. Allow approximately two hours each way by road, potentially longer with traffic. Travel can consume around half of a 7–8-hour call, so a ship-organized excursion is preferable. Do not combine Vigan with an extensive Laoag and Paoay itinerary during a short visit.
- For independent outings, aim to reach the port at least 60 minutes before all-aboard; allow more if tendering or instructed by the ship.
- Confirm the final tender time separately from the ship’s departure time.
- Carry water, sun protection, Philippine pesos and your driver’s telephone number.
- Cover shoulders and knees for church visits, and check museum opening arrangements before departure.
