Cuxhaven is an Elbe River/North Sea cruise port and town in Germany's Lower Saxony state (Cuxhaven district) with population around 50,000. The port (locode DECUX) is on the North Sea, and at the river's mouth. The distance between Cuxhaven and Bremen is approx 100 km (60 mi), to Hamburg is approx 130 km (80 mi). Trains to Hamburg and Bremen depart every hour.
Tourism is of great economic importance. Its origins go back to 1816 when in Cuxhaven was founded the seaside resort Seeheilbad.
Cuxhaven is an important homeport for commercial fishing boats and a registration point for ships approaching Hamburg and the Kiel Canal. Neuwerk Island is to the northwest of Cuxhaven.
Cruise ships to Cuxhaven dock at either Europe Quay or Humber Quay. The cruise terminal has 2 restaurants, taxi rank, tourist information, car parking. Shuttle bus services are provided.
The distance between the cruise port and downtown is ~2 km (1,2 mi), and to the nearest train station (Bahnhof Cuxhaven) - approx 1,5 km (1 mi). Cuxhaven-Nordholz Airport (approx 11 km / 7 mi from the port) serves only charter flights.
Fast ferries between Cuxhaven and Hamburg provide daily scheduled service, with crossing time ~2,5 hours. Transportation from Hamburg's ferry pier (Landungsbrucken stop) to the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) is provided by either the underground (line 3) or the trams S1 or S3.
Cuxhaven suits a relaxed day of ship-watching, maritime museums and coastal walking. Independent sightseeing is practical with some planning or transport: the central sights are manageable on foot once outside the port, while the sandy beaches at Döse and Duhnen are better reached by bus or taxi.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Cruise ships dock in Cuxhaven. Steubenhöft, beside the historic Hapag-Hallen passenger buildings, is used for cruise calls, but your ship may use another berth in the working harbour. Confirm the berth, permitted passenger exit and any shuttle arrangements before setting off; do not assume you can walk directly along the waterfront from the gangway.
From Steubenhöft, reach the town using the public streets around the harbour basins rather than attempting a shortcut across port premises. A taxi or any shuttle provided for your call is useful for starting at Alte Liebe or the town centre. Shuttle availability and drop-off points depend on the call.
Local bus 1004 links Steubenhöft/Fähre with the railway station and central bus station, Bahnhof/ZOB. Bus 1006 connects Bahnhof/ZOB, Alte Liebe, Döse and Duhnen. Check the day's timetable and the exact return stop; these are public services rather than dedicated cruise transfers.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Alte Liebe, the Harbour and the Pilots' Quarter
Allow 2–3 hours; easy independently after reaching the waterfront. Start at Alte Liebe, the viewing platform beside the shipping channel, where large vessels pass close to shore. Explore the nearby harbour, then stroll through the Lotsenviertel around Schillerstraße for small shops, cafés and a lunch stop. This is a good choice for a shorter call, with mostly level walking and opportunities to turn back early.
Windstärke 10 and Schloss Ritzebüttel
Allow 3–4 hours; practical independently. Windstärke 10 occupies former fish-packing halls and covers shipwrecks, life at sea and the fishing industry. Budget around 1–2 hours inside, then continue towards Schloss Ritzebüttel for its exterior and surrounding park. Add a fish lunch around the fishing harbour if time permits. Check museum and castle opening arrangements before relying on interior visits; this option is particularly useful in wet weather.
Kugelbake and the Döse Coast
Allow 3–4 hours with transport, or longer if walking from town. Visit the wooden Kugelbake navigation beacon, then walk along the Döse promenade and sandy beach. The coastal paths are mostly flat, although wind and exposure can make walking tiring. A bus or taxi towards Döse keeps more time available for the coast; confirm the nearest suitable stop and allow for the walk to the beacon.
Duhnen Beach and a Short Guided Mudflat Walk
Allow 4–5 hours including transport; independent with planning. Duhnen offers a sandy beach, promenade and places to eat. Swimming depends on the tide, weather and designated bathing conditions, so a beach walk is the more flexible plan. For a closer look at the Wadden Sea, consider a short guided mudflat walk: some introductory outings last 45–90 minutes, but departure times change with the tides. Book only a departure that leaves ample time to return to the ship.
Self-Guided Walking Tours
Easy: Alte Liebe and the Lotsenviertel
Start and finish: Alte Liebe. Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: 40–50 minutes. Recommended total: 1.5–2.5 hours. Mostly flat pavement; the viewing platform has an upper level reached by stairs.
- Alte Liebe: watch traffic on the Elbe shipping channel.
- Harbour-side lighthouse: pause for an exterior view beside the waterfront.
- Semaphore: see the historic wind-signalling structure near Alte Liebe.
- Harbour frontage: follow the public paths and streets beside the harbour.
- Schillerstraße in the Lotsenviertel: browse the shops or stop for coffee.
- Return to Alte Liebe: retrace the public streets to your onward transport.
This route begins at the sightseeing area, not the cruise berth. Add the transfer time back to your ship or shuttle meeting point.
Moderate: Alte Liebe to Kugelbake
Start: Alte Liebe. Finish: Kugelbake, followed by a walk to your chosen bus stop or taxi meeting point. Distance: approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) one way to the beacon. Pure walking time: 60–75 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours before the return transfer. Mostly flat, with exposed coastal stretches and short slopes onto the dike.
- Alte Liebe: begin with the shipping-channel viewpoint.
- Grimmershörn ferry-harbour area: follow public streets around the harbour to reach the bay.
- Grimmershörnbucht: continue along the waterfront beside the grassy shore.
- Seeterrassen area: pause for views across the estuary.
- Kugelbake: follow the signed public approach to the beacon.
- Döse beachfront: finish with a short promenade stroll if time allows.
Arrange the return by bus or taxi before starting. Walking back roughly doubles the distance, making this a substantial outing once port transfers are included.
Practical Tips
- Choose a manageable combination: for a typical 7–8 hours ashore, combine the central waterfront with either the museum and castle or a coastal visit. Allow time for lunch and port transfers.
- Respect the tides: take a guided tour for mudflat exploration. Do not cross tidal channels or attempt an independent walk to Neuwerk during a short cruise call.
- Keep island trips separate: Neuwerk and Helgoland require carefully matched transport schedules and are less flexible than staying in Cuxhaven. Consider them only when the full itinerary fits your call.
- Dress for exposure: bring a windproof layer and comfortable shoes, even when the weather feels mild beside the ship.
- Plan the return: aim to reach the port at least an hour before the ship's stated all-aboard time, allowing more margin for bus connections or a berth requiring a shuttle.
