Located in Baffin Bay (Nunavut Arctic Canada, Devon Island is the Earth's largest uninhabited isle and the 2nd-largest of the Queen Elizabeth Islands (after Ellesmere Island). Directly to the west is located Cornwallis Island.

Devon is Canada's 6th largest island - after Baffin, Victoria, Ellesmere, Newfoundland and Banks) and the world's 27th largest island, encompassing a total territory of  55247 km2 (21331 mi2). The island's highest elevation point is named Devon Ice Cap (1920 m / 6300 ft). The island features several mountain ranges, including Treuter Mountains, Cunningham Mountains, the Haddington Range. The island is also famous with its Haughton impact crater. Some 39 million years ago, a meteorite with diameter about 2 km (1,2 mi) crashed here creating a crater with diameter 23 km (14 mi). For several million years the crater was a lake.

Cape Liddon is an Important Bird Area notable for its populations of Arctic fulmars and black guillemots. Another Important Bird Area is Cape Vera noted for its Arctic fulmar population. Devon Island Research Station (est 1960) is located in Truelove Lowland (on the northeastern coast) and maintained by Arctic Institute of North America.

The Dundas Harbor settlement was established in August 1924 as a Canadian outpost with the intention to limit foreign activities (including whaling) in the region. In 1933, the Hudson's Bay Company leased the outpost. In 1934, a total of 52 Inuit people were relocated from Cape Dorset (on Dorset Island) to Dundas Harbour. However, they all returned to the mainland in 1947. In 1948, Dundas Harbour had a small patrol (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) personnel. However, due to ice difficulties, the station was closed again in 1951 and its staff moved to Craig Harbour (on Ellesmere Island). Today only the ruins of a few buildings remain, along with one of the world's northernmost cemeteries.

The list of "Canada top 10" largest islands (world rank in brackets) includes Baffin Island (5), Victoria Island (8), Ellesmere Island (10), Newfoundland (16), Banks Island (24), Devon Island (27), Axel Heiberg Island (32), Melville Island (33), Southampton Island (34) and Prince of Wales Island (40). All of them (excepting Newfoundland - in Newfoundland-Labrador) are located in the Nunavut- Northwest Territories of Arctic Canada.
