Dover is a small Cumberland River port where Fort Donelson National Battlefield is the main reason to go ashore. Organized excursion recommended for the battlefield’s full circuit; independent sightseeing is practical with prearranged transport. A short walk around the historic Dover Hotel is a simpler alternative if your landing provides convenient pedestrian access.

Getting from the River Landing

River cruise vessels have used Dover Landing Boat Ramp, with passengers disembarking directly ashore rather than tendering. This is a river landing, not a large cruise terminal. Confirm your vessel’s actual landing and passenger exit before planning an independent route.

Cruise visits have used buses to reach Fort Donelson and other local sights, but a sightseeing bus should not be assumed to operate as a free town shuttle. Check your ship’s arrangements. For an independent battlefield visit, arrange a vehicle and return pickup beforehand rather than relying on finding a taxi or rideshare at the landing.

The battlefield sites extend across park grounds and Dover. Its full driving circuit is approximately 9.7 km (6.0 mi), so walking the entire tour is not an efficient choice during a short call.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Fort Donelson Battlefield and River Batteries

Allow approximately 2–3 hours for a visit with transport, interpretation and short walks. Start at the visitor center, then explore the fort’s earthworks and the cannon positions overlooking the Cumberland River. The river batteries are the strongest combination of scenery and historic interest.

A guided excursion makes the scattered sites easier to understand and handles transport between stops. With a prearranged vehicle, you can follow the self-guided driving tour independently. Include the Dover Hotel and National Cemetery if time permits. Some viewpoints have accessible facilities, while woodland paths involve slopes and uneven ground.

Dover Hotel and a Short Town Visit

The historic Dover Hotel, also called the Surrender House, marks the place where the Confederate surrender was agreed in 1862. Allow 45–90 minutes for the hotel grounds, exhibits when open, and a short look around central Dover.

This is a compact alternative to the full battlefield tour. Confirm the walking approach from your landing and the hotel’s opening arrangements; access to the grounds does not guarantee that the interior is open. Treat shops or refreshments as optional stops rather than the main purpose of the visit.

Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge

For a nature-focused alternative, consider a prearranged vehicle outing to Cross Creeks, east of Dover. Allow approximately 2–3 hours overall for a modest visit with a scenic drive, birdwatching and short stops. Wildlife sightings vary, and binoculars are useful.

Seasonal limitation: refuge roads and outdoor areas close from November 15 through March 15 to protect wintering birds. The office and visitor center remain available on a limited weekday schedule. Confirm current access before arranging transport; this is not a walk-from-the-ship attraction.

Self-Guided Battlefield Walk

Fort Earthworks and River Batteries — Moderate

Start: the battlefield visitor center or education pavilion after a vehicle transfer. Allow approximately 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) of walking, depending on the paths selected, with 45–60 minutes of moving time and 1.5–2 hours including stops. Use the park map and ask staff about current trail conditions.

  1. Begin with the visitor center’s orientation and exhibits when available.
  2. Visit the Confederate Monument near the entrance area.
  3. Continue to the fort earthworks and interpretive displays.
  4. Follow the mapped connection toward the Upper River Battery.
  5. Visit the Lower River Battery overlook for cannon positions and river views.
  6. Retrace the appropriate mapped route to your agreed pickup point.

Expect hills and sections with dirt, rocks and exposed roots; wet paths can be slippery. Wear sturdy shoes and avoid climbing on earthworks. This walk covers the central fort area, not the separate Dover Hotel and National Cemetery. Arrange the return transfer before starting.

Practical Tips

  • For a short call, choose the battlefield tour or one alternative rather than combining several vehicle outings.
  • Check building hours separately from outdoor access, and download the park map before leaving the ship.
  • Carry water, sun protection and insect repellent for outdoor visits.
  • Confirm the all-aboard time and return landing. For independent outings, aim to reach the landing at least 45–60 minutes before all-aboard, with additional allowance for uncertain transport.
