Durres (Tirana, Albania)

Durrës offers a manageable independent visit combining Roman ruins, the old town and the seafront. It also serves as a gateway to Tirana and Kruja, but either destination requires a road transfer and takes a substantial part of the call.

Independent sightseeing: Easy independently once outside the port. The central sights are close together. Confirm the passenger exit and arrangements between your ship and the gate before setting off.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Cruise ships normally dock inside the working commercial harbour. Your berth determines the distance and permitted route to the passenger exit; do not assume the ferry terminal entrance is the exit used for your cruise. Follow the ship’s instructions about walking or any arranged transfer through the port.

Once outside on the city side, the old town is generally within approximately 10–25 minutes on foot, depending on the gate. The Venetian Tower is a useful starting point for sightseeing. Central Durrës needs no public transport, although uneven pavements and busy road crossings require care.

For beaches or trips inland, arrange a taxi or private driver and confirm the pickup point, total fare and return arrangements. Do not assume a city shuttle will be provided.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Old Town, Amphitheatre and Waterfront

Allow 2–4 hours for the most straightforward local visit. Combine the Venetian Tower and surviving city walls with the Roman Amphitheatre, central squares and Taulantia promenade. The amphitheatre is the principal archaeological stop; allow around 30–45 minutes, with steps and uneven ancient surfaces inside.

Add the Archaeological Museum near the waterfront if its opening times suit your call. Allow approximately another hour. A café or seafood lunch along the seafront fits easily into a longer independent visit.

A Beach Break

Choose the sandy Durrës beach strip east and south of the harbour, or continue towards Golem. These are separate from the central sightseeing waterfront, so a taxi transfer is more practical than walking from the ship.

Allow 3–5 hours including transfers and agree on a specific beach and return pickup point. Journey time varies considerably with the stretch chosen and summer traffic. Check charges for loungers and facilities before settling in; popular sections can be busy.

Tirana Highlights

Independent with planned transport. Allow roughly 45–75 minutes each way by road, with longer journeys possible in traffic. A focused 5–6-hour outing can cover Skanderbeg Square, the exterior of Et’hem Bey Mosque, the pedestrian centre and one nearby attraction such as Bunk’Art 2.

A prearranged driver or organized excursion makes better use of a cruise call than an improvised bus journey. Public transport adds waiting and onward travel within Tirana. Choose a compact central itinerary and begin the return early.

Kruja Castle and Old Bazaar

Organized excursion recommended, or a prearranged return transfer. Allow approximately 60–90 minutes each way by road and around 5–6 hours overall. The old bazaar, castle grounds and Skanderbeg Museum form a practical visit without adding other distant stops.

Kruja involves uphill walking, cobbles and steps; surfaces can be slippery when wet. It is less suitable for passengers who need a consistently level route. Combining Kruja and Tirana is best reserved for a long call with a carefully timed excursion.

Self-Guided Walking Route

Central Durrës and the Seafront

Start and finish: Venetian Tower, after reaching the city through your designated port exit. Distance: approximately 3 km (1.9 mi), excluding the connection to your berth. Pure walking time: 45–60 minutes. Recommended total: 2.5–4 hours, depending on attraction visits and breaks.

1. Venetian Tower: Begin beside the round tower at the edge of the old town.
2. Surviving city walls: Follow the adjoining fortifications towards the amphitheatre.
3. Roman Amphitheatre: Make this the main sightseeing stop, entering if open.
4. Sheshi Liria: Continue to the central square for the town hall and exterior of the Great Mosque.
5. Byzantine Forum: Take a short detour to see the surviving columns and archaeological remains.
6. Archaeological Museum: Head towards the waterfront for an optional indoor visit.
7. Taulantia promenade: Follow the seafront back towards the Venetian Tower, with time for a refreshment stop.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Most of the route is relatively level, but old-town lanes have uneven paving and the amphitheatre adds steps. The waterfront is exposed to sun. From the tower, retrace the approved route to your passenger gate or transfer pickup point; allow additional time to reach the ship.

Practical Tips for Your Call

• Check attraction opening times before building the day around an interior visit.
• Carry comfortable walking shoes, drinking water and sun protection; archaeological sites offer limited shade.
• Keep some Albanian lek for small purchases and admission payments where cards may not be accepted.
• For Tirana, Kruja or a beach transfer, tell your driver the ship’s all-aboard time and agree on an earlier port return.
• When staying locally, aim to reach the designated port entrance at least an hour before all-aboard, allowing more if an internal transfer is required. Longer road trips need a larger margin for traffic.
