Eberswalde is an Oder River cruise port and town in Germany's Brandenburg state (Barnim district) with population around 40,000. The town is located approx 50 km (30 mi) northeast of Berlin (Germany's capital). Eberswalde (aka Waldstadt / forest town) is famous for its large surrounding forests, including the Schorfheide Reserve.
Initially named Everswolde ("forest of the boars"), the town was established in 1254 and in 1300 received its market rights. Its economy started to develop after 1317 when it became part of the shipping trade route Stettin-Frankfurt (Oder). In 1499, a major fire devastated Eberswalde. When subsequently rebuilt, Eberswalde became Margraviate of Brandenburg's first and largest industrial town, with main industry being metallurgy.
In the period 1605-1620 was constructed the 50-km long Finowkanal (one of Europe's oldest man-made waterways) connecting the rivers Oder and Havel. In the period 1908-1914 was constructed the Hohenzollern Canal (now Oder-Havel Canal) replacing Finowkanal. Oder-Havel Canal (length 83 km / 51 mi, width 33 m / 108 ft) runs from Cedynia (near Szczecin Poland) to Berlin (on Havel River / Elbe River's tributary). In 1934, near Niederfinow was built a boat lift with max lifting capacity 1000 displacement tons.
The town has direct access to three highways (B2, B167, A11-E28). It is also served by Flugplatz Finow airfield (former Russian Air Force base). Among the best-known tourist attractions are Eberswalde's annual festivals "Rock me Magdalena" (rock concert held in Pfarrkirche Sankt Maria Magdalena / church) and "Filmfest Eberswalde" (for independent movies and documentaries), as well as Forstbotanischer Garten Eberswalde (botanical garden).
Eberswalde offers a compact town center, canal-side walks and woodland gardens. For a short river-cruise call, exploring the center is the simplest choice once you have reached it. The nearby Niederfinow ship lifts and Chorin Abbey require separate transport.
Independent with some planning or transport: central sightseeing is straightforward on foot, but confirm your ship’s actual landing place before planning the journey into town.
Getting from the Ship
Eberswalde is a river-and-canal cruise stop rather than a sea-cruise terminal. Check the landing address and permitted pedestrian exit with the crew. The small-boat moorings beside the central Finow Canal should not be assumed to be your cruise berth, and the port map alone does not establish walking access.
If a transfer is needed, the Marktplatz or Tourist Information at Steinstraße 3 makes a useful starting point. Confirm whether your sailing provides transport; otherwise, arrange a taxi and its return pickup in advance. Local buses can be useful, but check connections from the actual landing place rather than choosing a route solely by the name “Eberswalde.”
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Town Center and Finow Canal
Allow 1.5–2.5 hours in the center for the market square, Maria-Magdalenen Church, Park am Weidendamm and the canal. This is the most flexible independent option: shorten the walk for a brief call or add a café stop. Museum Eberswalde, housed in the historic Adler-Apotheke, is a useful indoor addition if opening times fit; allow another 45–60 minutes.
Forstbotanischer Garten
The forestry botanical garden offers tree collections, shaded paths and a quieter alternative to town sightseeing. Allow 1–1.5 hours inside, plus travel. From the center, walking there and back makes this a longer outing; a taxi can preserve time for the garden itself. Admission is free. Expect some slopes and natural paths, which can be slippery after rain.
Niederfinow Ship Lifts
The historic and modern ship lifts are a separate excursion east of Eberswalde. Viewing the structures from land provides a different perspective from passing through aboard your cruise ship. Choose one principal experience: a site visit, a guided tour or a separately booked sightseeing-boat trip.
Independent visiting is practical with a prearranged return taxi and enough time for the selected activity. Bus 916 provides a public-transport option from Eberswalde, but the timetable must fit both directions. An organized excursion is preferable during a short stop, particularly if passengers rejoin the ship farther along the canal.
Chorin Abbey
The ruined brick Gothic monastery suits passengers interested in architecture and a quieter outing. Allow around 1–1.5 hours at the abbey, plus both transfers. A taxi with an agreed return pickup is the simplest independent arrangement. Traveling by train adds station transfers and a walk of roughly 25 minutes each way between Chorin station and the abbey.
Choose Chorin instead of a substantial town visit during a short call. Combining it with Niederfinow is better suited to an organized excursion that coordinates transport and the ship’s movements.
Self-Guided Walk: Town Center to the Canal
Start: Tourist Information, Steinstraße 3. Distance: approximately 3 km (1.9 mi), excluding travel from the ship. Walking time: 45–60 minutes. Recommended time: 1.5–2.5 hours with short stops. Difficulty: easy to moderate, with paved streets, some uneven surfaces and gentle changes in level.
- Museum Eberswalde: begin outside the timber-framed Adler-Apotheke, which also houses Tourist Information.
- University town campus: follow An der Friedensbrücke and Goethestraße toward Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, then continue toward Am Kienwerder.
- Park am Weidendamm: take a short detour through the park beside the Schwärze stream.
- Maria-Magdalenen Church: continue along Schicklerstraße to the brick church. Interior access depends on opening arrangements.
- Old town-wall remains: continue behind the church via Salomon-Goldschmidt-Straße and Erich-Schuppan-Straße toward Nagelstraße.
- Marktplatz: reach the square via Jüdenstraße and Breite Straße for the Lion Fountain, town halls and Paul-Wunderlich-Haus.
- Finow Canal and Stadtschleuse: continue through the central streets toward Kreuzstraße and Mauerstraße, then reach the canal and pedestrian bridge by the town lock.
Finish with a short waterside stroll if time permits. Return to your agreed pickup point or follow the crew-confirmed route to the landing. The walk’s duration does not include the transfer back to the ship.
Practical Tips for Your Call
- For a brief stop, choose the central walk or one excursion outside town. Avoid trying to combine all the highlights.
- Confirm where the ship will be when you return. A sightseeing stop may form part of a moving canal itinerary.
- Check attraction opening times and book timed tours or boat trips before committing to transport.
- For independent outings, build at least 30–45 minutes of contingency into your return plan, beyond the expected journey and before the ship’s stated all-aboard time. Allow more when relying on public transport.
- Berlin is a separate city trip requiring substantial additional travel and is unsuitable for a short Eberswalde call.
