Eberswalde is an Oder River cruise port and town in Germany's Brandenburg state (Barnim district) with population around 40,000. The town is located approx 50 km (30 mi) northeast of Berlin (Germany's capital). Eberswalde (aka Waldstadt / forest town) is famous for its large surrounding forests, including the Schorfheide Reserve.

Initially named Everswolde ("forest of the boars"), the town was established in 1254 and in 1300 received its market rights. Its economy started to develop after 1317 when it became part of the shipping trade route Stettin-Frankfurt (Oder). In 1499, a major fire devastated Eberswalde. When subsequently rebuilt, Eberswalde became Margraviate of Brandenburg's first and largest industrial town, with main industry being metallurgy.

In the period 1605-1620 was constructed the 50-km long Finowkanal (one of Europe's oldest man-made waterways) connecting the rivers Oder and Havel. In the period 1908-1914 was constructed the Hohenzollern Canal (now Oder-Havel Canal) replacing Finowkanal. Oder-Havel Canal (length 83 km / 51 mi, width 33 m / 108 ft) runs from Cedynia (near Szczecin Poland) to Berlin (on Havel River / Elbe River's tributary). In 1934, near Niederfinow was built a boat lift with max lifting capacity 1000 displacement tons.

The town has direct access to three highways (B2, B167, A11-E28). It is also served by Flugplatz Finow airfield (former Russian Air Force base). Among the best-known tourist attractions are Eberswalde's annual festivals "Rock me Magdalena" (rock concert held in Pfarrkirche Sankt Maria Magdalena / church) and "Filmfest Eberswalde" (for independent movies and documentaries), as well as Forstbotanischer Garten Eberswalde (botanical garden).
