Erie PA (Pennsylvania)

Erie PA is a Lake Erie cruise port and city in northwestern Pennsylvania (USA). The town was named after Lake Erie, itself named after an Indian tribe that used to reside along the lake's southern shore. By population (around 100,000, metro around 280,000), the city is Pennsylvania's 4th-largest - following Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Allentown.

The manufacturing sector of Erie remains prominent in the local economy, though service industries, higher education, tourism, and healthcare have emerged as greater economic drivers. Erie is visited by millions for recreation at Presque Isle State Park - a 3200-acre/13-km2 peninsula arching into the lake and featuring sandy beaches, a historic lighthouse, and rich nature habitats.

The city also boasts attractions like the horse racetrack and casino, the Hagen History Center, the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, popular restaurants, wineries, breweries, and the city's waterfront.

Presque Isle Bay is a natural bay with sheltered waters. It covers approx 6 ml2 (15 km2), and has a length of ~4.6 mi (7,4 km) and a width of ~2 mi (3 km / widest point). The bay's average depth is 20 ft (6 m). On the south, it is edged by the city's shoreline, where there are the Port of Erie Marine Terminal (cruise ship docking area), yacht/boat marinas, several recreational parks, and tourist attractions. The channel on the east is the bay's entrance from Lake Erie.

In July 2026, Victory Cruise Lines/VCL confirmed that Erie PA will become an official port of call on its Great Lakes cruise schedule from July 2028, following more than 18 months of planning with local and regional partners. The announcement was made during a joint conference hosted by Victory Cruise Lines, the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, Erie County officials, VisitErie (Erie County's official Destination Marketing Organization), and representatives from Presque Isle State Park.

According to the statement, VCL incorporated Erie into a new Great Lakes itinerary that will operate across all five Great Lakes and eight USA states. VCL indicated that developing a route that includes Erie required extensive itinerary planning after its initial visit to the city in March 2025. Following a series of subsequent evaluations and discussions with local stakeholders, VCL concluded that Erie offered a suitable addition to its Great Lakes program. The first VCL ship call was scheduled for July 21st, 2028.
