Esbjerg is a port city in southwestern Denmark, located on Jutland peninsula's western coast. The municipality covers a total area of approx 743 km2 (287 mi2). The town has population around 72,000, ranking it Denmark's 5th largest.

By road, Esbjerg is approx 70 km (44 ml) west of Kolding and approx 165 km (102 ml) southwest of Aarhus. Esbjerg harbor facilities were expanded to serve boxships (container shipping traffic) and the new wind-turbine (offshore renewable energy) industry. The city is served by Esbjerg Airport (located approx 9 km / 6 ml northeast of downtown). The airport serves the airlines Danish Air Transport (DAT / passenger and cargo carrier) and Loganair (Scottish airline transporting passengers, cargo and mail). From Esbjerg are offered regularly scheduled flights to Aberdeen Scotland and Stavanger Norway, plus seasonal domestic flights to Ronne (Bornholm Island, Denmark).

The town is popular for its museums, including Esbjerg Museum (themed on city's history), Esbjerg Art Museum (themed on modern and experimental arts), Fisheries and Maritime Museum (sea-themed). In Esbjerg are also the branches of two major Danish universities - Aalborg, and Southern Denmark. The football club Esbjerg forenede (united) Boldklubber is based here and plays its matches at Esbjerg Stadion (aka Blue Water Arena, capacity 11,000 seats). Esbjerg Elite Ishockey (the ice hockey team Esbjerg Energy) plays at the 800-seat Granly Hockey Arena.

Port Esbjerg

Before 1868, when the harbour port Esbjerg was established, this area consisted of farms around which the town quickly developed - from population ~13,000 (1901) to ~70,000 (1970). Along with cargo shipping and commercial fishing industries, Esbjerg has well-developed agricultural export trade. Most visitors used to arrive by ferries from Harwich England. However, the regularly scheduled (since 1875) ferry service was terminated in 2014. Freight shipping with UK is still available - between Esbjerg and Immingham (England).

For FY2018 (fiscal year), the Port (locode DKEBJ) reported a cargo turnover of 4,5 million tons, 6000+ port calls (ship dockings) and served 6 regularly-scheduled cargo routes linking to 25 port destinations.

In May 2019, Port Esbjerg purchased one "Liebherr LHM 800 Litronic" - currently ranked world's largest Mobile Harbour Crane by lifting capacity (308 tons). As of 2019, worldwide there are only 12 such units. The acquisition was part of port's expansion to better serve the increased cargo shipping traffic - by 66% in just four years (2014-2018). Liebherr LHM 800 weighs 800 tons, has height 48 m (158 ft) and boom length 66 m (217 ft). The crane was scheduled for installation in August 2019. The need for it was prompted mainly by the offshore wind-farming industry as the North Sea-based wind turbine components are constantly getting bigger in size. The new crane is also needed for in-port uses - handling heavy production equipment and machinery.

In late-June 2022 European Energy AS (Soborg Denmark-based company with a wind farm in Made/near Esbjerg) announced that it starts delivering green hydrogen to Port Esbjerg in 2023-H1. The hydrogen is used for bunkering of ships fitted with fuel cell technologies. The large amount of excess heat generated during the green hydrogen's production is fed into Esbjerg's heating network.

  • In late-February 2021, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners PS (Danish fund management and investment firm specializing in infrastructure/particularly wind power) announced plans to establish Europe’s largest green ammonia (CO2-free) production facility in Esbjerg.
  • The PtX-facility (Power-to-X) turns into green ammonia the electricity generated from offshore wind farms.
  • The PtX-facility project is planned for completion by 2026 and initially used two test wind turbines (installed by European Energy AS). The green ammonia is used as fertilizer (in the agriculture sector) and also by ships (powered by fuel cells). PtX-facility's excess heat provides heating for ~1/3rd of Esbjerg's households.
  • The PtX-facility consists of 1 GW electrolysis and has max annual capacity 900,000 tonnes of ammonia.

Esbjerg offers a compact city centre, coastal sights and access to Fanø island and the medieval town of Ribe. Independent sightseeing is easy in central Esbjerg once outside the port; Fanø and Ribe require some transport planning. For a typical 7–8-hour call, choose one main outing rather than trying to combine both destinations.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at working harbour quays rather than a dedicated cruise terminal. Berths can include Englandskaj, Trafikhavnen and Smørkaj. The usual cruise quays are approximately 1 km (0.6 mi) from the city centre, but the actual walking route depends on the berth and designated passenger exit.

Confirm the permitted route through the port before setting off. Once on public streets, Landgangen provides a pedestrian connection between Dokhavnen and the city above the harbour. Do not take shortcuts through operational areas.

Do not assume a regular cruise shuttle will be available. Follow your ship’s arrangements, and request a taxi in advance if needed. Esbjerg railway station provides connections to Ribe; the separate Fanø ferry terminal serves Nordby on the island.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Central Esbjerg: an easy local visit

Allow 2–3 hours, plus the walk or transfer from your berth. Combine harbour views from Landgangen and Byparken with Torvet square and the pedestrian shopping street Kongensgade. This is the simplest independent option, with cafés and opportunities to shorten the outing if the weather deteriorates.

The Water Tower is an exterior sightseeing stop; it is no longer open to visitors. Esbjerg Art Museum can provide an indoor addition near Byparken, subject to opening on your call date.

Man Meets the Sea and the Fisheries and Maritime Museum

Allow 3–4 hours with transport. The four white seated figures at Sædding Strand stand approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) from central Esbjerg. Combine a sculpture and shoreline stop with the nearby Fisheries and Maritime Museum, which has aquariums, seals and maritime displays.

A taxi or local bus is more practical than walking both ways during a short call. Check current bus connections and the museum’s programme before leaving. The coast is exposed to wind, and a short shoreline stroll may be more comfortable than an extended beach visit.

Fanø: ferry crossing and Nordby village

Allow 3–5 hours from the ship, depending on port access and ferry waits. The ferry from Esbjerg to Nordby takes about 12 minutes. Nordby’s waterfront, traditional houses, narrow lanes and cafés are close to the island ferry landing, making this a practical independent outing without a car.

Explore the harbour promenade, Hovedgaden and the small passages known as slipper. Ved Trappen is a particularly distinctive lane overlooking the harbour. Birds and sometimes seals can be observed from the waterfront, although sightings are not guaranteed.

Nordby is not the island’s broad west-coast beach. Adding Fanø Bad, the dunes or Sønderho requires further transport and a larger time allowance. For a relaxed cruise visit, concentrate on Nordby and return to Esbjerg well before all-aboard.

Ribe: a separate half-day destination

Allow 5–6 hours overall. Direct trains from Esbjerg to Ribe take approximately 30–35 minutes each way, in addition to getting to Esbjerg station, waiting and walking into Ribe’s old centre.

Spend around 2–3 hours exploring the cathedral square, old streets, the Old Town Hall area and the riverside. The compact centre suits independent walking, although cobbles can be tiring. Check cathedral access before planning an interior visit.

Independent travel is practical when train times fit comfortably. An organized excursion is preferable for a shorter call or if you want to combine Ribe with countryside attractions. Select a return train that leaves a later service as a backup, with enough time still available to reach the ship.

Self-Guided Walking Tour

Landgangen, Byparken and the city centre

Route: approximately 2–2.5 km (1.2–1.6 mi), excluding the approach from your cruise berth. Allow 35–50 minutes of walking, or 2–3 hours with sightseeing and a café stop. Difficulty is easy to moderate: mostly paved, with a climb between harbour level and the city and some uneven surfaces.

  1. Dokhavnen: start at the public harbour end of Landgangen after following the designated exit route from your berth.
  2. Landgangen: follow the pedestrian connection uphill, stopping at viewpoints over the working harbour.
  3. Byparken and the Water Tower: explore the park and view the tower from outside.
  4. Musikhuset and Esbjerg Art Museum: see the cultural buildings; add a museum visit if open and time permits.
  5. Torvet: continue to the main square and its equestrian statue.
  6. Kongensgade: walk a section of the pedestrian street, then return towards Havnegade and Landgangen.

Retrace the approved route to your ship. If your berth uses a different passenger exit or a ship-arranged transfer, begin and end the walk at the confirmed city access point instead.

Practical Tips for Your Call

  • Choose one main destination: central Esbjerg combines comfortably with the sculptures and museum; Ribe and Fanø are better treated as separate outings.
  • Keep a return margin: aim to reach the port around an hour before all-aboard, allowing additional time for ferry disruption, train delays or any required port transfer.
  • Check the day’s arrangements: note your berth, passenger gate and any last shuttle time before leaving.
  • Prepare for coastal weather: bring a windproof waterproof layer and comfortable shoes.
  • Use a guide for tidal excursions: Wadden Sea mudflat and seal-bank walks depend on tides and local conditions. Do not improvise an offshore walk during a cruise call.
