Esztergom (port locode HUEST) is a Danube River cruise port located in northern Hungary. The city is approx 46 km (29 mi) northwest of the country's capital, Budapest.
River cruise ships in Esztergom dock right in front of the Esztergom Basilica (19th-century cathedral, Hungary's largest church building (inner area 5600 m2/60280 ft2). Almost all riverboats dock in Esztergom, from where the tourists easily walk across the Meria Valeria Bridge to Sturovo (Slovakia).
Esztergom lies on the Danube's right bank, forming the border with Slovakia. Esztergom was Hungary's capital from the 10th until the mid-13th century when the royal seat was moved to Buda. The town covers a total area of 100 km2 (39 ml2) and has population around 30,000.
Esztergom is the seat of the Primate (prímás) of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary, as well as the former seat of Hungary's Constitutional Court. The city boasts its Kereszteny Muzeum, featuring the largest ecclesiastical collection in Hungary.
Esztergom is among the oldest cities in Hungary, with winding streets and church towers creating a historical atmosphere. Below the Basilica, at the edge of the mountain, stand the old bastions, rondellas and walls – the remains of the Esztergom castle. The remains of one section of the castle that had been built during Ottoman rule had been buried until the 1930s. One of the major events of the 1930s was the renovation of the remains of the palace of the Arpad period (845-907) was the head of the confederation of Hungarian tribes. Those traveling today to Esztergom can admire the Basilica, the most monumental construction of Hungarian Classicism, which rules the landscape above the Danube, surrounded by mountains.
Esztergom’s main attractions cluster around Castle Hill and the Danube waterfront. For a first visit, focus on the Basilica, the former royal castle and the historic Water Town below. With more time, add a riverside walk or cross Mária Valéria Bridge to Štúrovo in Slovakia for views back toward the city.
Getting from the Cruise Port
River cruise ships berth along the Danube below the Basilica area. Confirm your ship’s exact mooring and return arrangements before setting off, as these determine your walking route.
The waterfront and Water Town are useful starting points for independent exploring. Reaching the Basilica and castle involves an uphill walk; the Macskalépcső, or Cat Steps, connect the lower town with Castle Hill. Passengers with limited mobility should check suitable access or transport arrangements with the cruise staff.
Best Things to Do
Visit Esztergom Basilica
Hungary’s largest church is the city’s principal landmark. Inside, look for the Renaissance Bakócz Chapel, which was dismantled and incorporated into the present cathedral. The Treasury and dome lookout offer additional visits, subject to opening arrangements and available time.
The dome requires climbing approximately 400 steps and may close in poor weather. For a less demanding visit, concentrate on the church interior and the views from Castle Hill.
Explore the Castle Museum
Beside the Basilica, the Castle Museum preserves parts of Esztergom’s medieval royal palace. Its historic rooms, chapel and archaeological remains provide context for the city’s role in early Hungarian history. This is a practical addition to a Castle Hill visit if your port call allows time for a museum.
Walk through Water Town
Below Castle Hill, Víziváros, or Water Town, offers historic streets, the Primate’s Palace and the Water Town Church. Explore this lower district before or after the hilltop sights, or make it the focus of a gentler outing.
See the Christian Museum
Located in the Primate’s Palace, the Christian Museum holds a substantial collection of Hungarian and European religious art, including medieval paintings, sculpture and altarpieces. It is particularly worthwhile for visitors interested in art history. Check current opening hours and access arrangements before visiting.
Enjoy the Little Danube Promenade
The tree-lined Little Danube Promenade links several central districts, including Water Town and the area around Széchenyi Square. Choose a short out-and-back stroll if your time ashore is limited, or extend your walk toward the town centre for a café stop.
Cross Mária Valéria Bridge
The bridge connects Esztergom with Štúrovo in Slovakia. A walk to the opposite bank offers a broad view of the Basilica and castle above the Danube. Treat this as an optional extension after the main sights, allowing enough time to retrace your route to the ship.
Self-Guided Walking Options
Castle Hill Highlights
Head from your mooring toward Castle Hill, visit the Basilica and enjoy the outdoor viewpoints. Add the Castle Museum only if opening hours and your remaining time permit. The climb and any interior visits should be considered when planning your return.
Waterfront and Lower Town
Explore Water Town around Mindszenty Square and the Primate’s Palace, then continue along the Little Danube Promenade toward Széchenyi Square. This option avoids making the hilltop climb the centre of your visit, although surfaces and access still vary along the route.
Planning Your Time Ashore
- Very short call: Choose one nearby area after confirming the mooring. Do not assume there is enough time for a hilltop visit or museum entry.
- A few hours: Prioritize the Basilica and Castle Hill, adding either the Castle Museum or a lower-town walk.
- Longer call: Combine the hilltop sights with Water Town, a museum or the bridge walk. Leave space for breaks and the return journey.
If joining an excursion, check where it finishes and whether you return to the same mooring or rejoin the ship elsewhere.
Practical Tips
- Church clothing: Cover shoulders and knees when entering the Basilica.
- Steps and slopes: Wear shoes suitable for hill climbs, stairways and uneven historic surfaces.
- Opening arrangements: Check museum hours and Basilica access for your visit date; services can affect sightseeing access.
- Cross-border walk: Before visiting Štúrovo, confirm document requirements and the cruise line’s instructions.
- Return timing: Follow the ship’s stated all-aboard time and allow a buffer for the walk back and embarkation.
