Florence (Firenze) is the largest city and the capital of Italy's Tuscany region (population around 390,000) as well as the core of the Florence metropolis (total population over 1,5 million). Tourists traveling on ocean-going cruise ships access Firenze via Port Livorno.
The city was a center of European trade and finance during medieval times and one of the wealthiest of the time. It is often considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, and has been named "the Athens of the Middle Ages". The turbulent political history of Florence includes periods of rule by the Medici family and a wealth of republican and religious revolutions. between 1865-1871, Firenze was the capital of Italy's recently established Kingdom.
The historic downtown attracts around 13 million tourists per year. In 2012, Euromonitor International ranked it the world's 89th most visited (1,8 million visitors). In 1982, Florence was designated a UNESCO site. The city is noted for its rich culture, plenty of monuments, Renaissance art and architecture. Florence also boasts numerous art galleries and museums, such as Palazzo Pitti and Uffizi Gallery, and still exerts influence in the fields of politics, art and culture. Due to the artistic and architectural heritage of the city, it has been ranked as one of the most beautiful in the world by Forbes.
Florence's famous bridge, Ponte Vecchio, is over the Arno River (at the river's narrowest point). It still has shops (selling jewelry, art items, and souvenirs) built along it. The neighboring bridges are named Ponte Santa Trinita and Ponte alle Grazie.
Florence is a major city in Italian fashion, ranked in the world's top 51 fashion capitals. It is also an important national economic center, as well as an industrial and tourist hub. In 2008, it had Italy's 17th-highest average income.
Florence is an inland sightseeing destination, not a cruise berth. Ocean-cruise passengers usually visit from Livorno; some itineraries use La Spezia. Florence may also appear as a land-based stop within a cruise-and-tour itinerary. Check your actual arrival port before arranging transport.
Independent with some planning or transport. Florence’s historic center is compact and easy to explore on foot, but reaching it from the coast takes a substantial part of the day. An organized excursion or prearranged return transfer is preferable when time ashore is limited.
Getting to Florence from the Cruise Port
From Livorno: ships normally dock within the working port, with different berths and terminal arrangements. Alto Fondale is one cruise terminal, but your ship may use another berth. Follow the ship’s instructions for reaching the shuttle, taxi or excursion pickup; do not assume you can walk directly out of the port.
- Direct road transfer: allow approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours each way, depending on traffic and the Florence drop-off point. Budget at least 3–4 hours of the call for road travel, plus boarding and meeting time.
- Train: first reach Livorno Centrale by taxi, or use the downtown port shuttle followed by a local bus or taxi. The downtown shuttle does not itself deliver you to Florence. Trains to Firenze Santa Maria Novella generally take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes; some require a change. Including port connections and waiting, allow around 2–2.5 hours each way.
- On arrival: Santa Maria Novella station is approximately 10–15 minutes’ walk from the Duomo. Coach drop-off and pickup points vary, and may require additional walking into the center.
From La Spezia: Florence involves a longer transfer than from Livorno. Use arrangements specific to that port and check the full return journey before committing. For a single-day call, an organized excursion is generally the more practical choice.
If Florence is part of a land-based cruise itinerary, use your hotel or tour meeting point as the starting point rather than looking for a local cruise terminal.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Historic Squares and Ponte Vecchio
For a first visit, concentrate on the Duomo exterior, Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi courtyard and Ponte Vecchio. Allow 3–4 hours in Florence for a relaxed walk, photographs and a short meal. This is the most flexible independent option because it does not depend on museum admission times. The central route is mostly level, with stone paving, occasional uneven surfaces and heavy pedestrian traffic.
One Major Museum and a Short Walk
Choose either the Uffizi for Renaissance painting or the Accademia for Michelangelo’s David. Allow approximately 2–3 hours for a focused Uffizi visit, or 1–1.5 hours for the Accademia, plus admission procedures. Reserve ahead and leave a generous gap between your expected arrival and the entry slot.
Combine your museum with nearby sights rather than attempting both galleries during a coastal port call. Check opening days before booking; Monday closures affect major museums, and admission queues can remain even with reservations.
Oltrarno and the Riverside
For a quieter alternative to museum visits, cross Ponte Vecchio and explore Piazza Pitti, Santo Spirito and the streets between them. Return across Ponte Santa Trinita for views toward Ponte Vecchio. Allow approximately 1.5–2 hours from the Ponte Vecchio area, including a café stop. This works independently and is mostly level, though narrow pavements and uneven paving require attention.
Piazzale Michelangelo Viewpoint
The terrace above the south bank offers a broad view over Florence. From Ponte Vecchio, allow approximately 30–40 minutes each way on foot, with an uphill section and stairs depending on the route. Budget 1.5–2 hours including photographs and the return. A taxi can reduce the climbing, but arrange the return before relying on one. Treat this as an alternative to a major museum when your sightseeing window is short.
Self-Guided Walking Tour
Florence Highlights from Santa Maria Novella
Start and finish: Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station. Distance: approximately 3.5 km (2.2 mi). Walking time: 50–65 minutes without stops. Recommended total: 2.5–3.5 hours, excluding museum visits or lengthy admission queues. Difficulty: easy to moderate; mostly level, with stone paving, crowds and some narrow walking spaces.
- Piazza Santa Maria Novella: begin with the church façade and open square close to the station.
- Piazza del Duomo: follow Via dei Banchi and Via de’ Cerretani to the cathedral, Baptistery and bell tower. View the complex from outside unless you have time reserved for entry.
- Piazza della Repubblica: walk along Via Roma to the square and its cafés.
- Orsanmichele: continue along Via Calimala and Via dell’Arte della Lana to see the church’s exterior sculpture niches.
- Piazza della Signoria: explore the square beside Palazzo Vecchio and the sculptures beneath the Loggia dei Lanzi.
- Uffizi courtyard: walk through the courtyard toward the Arno without entering the gallery.
- Ponte Vecchio: continue along the river to the bridge, then cross for a brief look at the opposite bank.
- Ponte Santa Trinita: follow the south bank west, cross this bridge for views of Ponte Vecchio, and return via Via de’ Tornabuoni and Piazza Santa Maria Novella to the station.
Coach passengers should adapt the start and finish to their confirmed meeting point. Allow additional time to reach it; the station is not a universal excursion pickup location.
Choosing an Excursion
A return coach transfer with free time suits passengers who want to explore independently without managing the port-to-station connection. A guided excursion is useful for a first visit or when museum admission is explicitly included. Check how much time is actually spent in Florence and how far you must walk from the coach.
Combined Florence-and-Pisa excursions involve more travel and less time at each destination. Choose Florence alone if you want a museum visit, an unhurried walk or time for lunch. During a short call, staying in Livorno or choosing nearby Pisa may be more realistic than reaching Florence.
Practical Tips and Returning to the Ship
- Plan backward from all-aboard time: include the complete coastal transfer, traffic or rail delays, port access and boarding procedures. For independent travel, aim to be back at the port at least 60–90 minutes before all-aboard, with more margin when services are infrequent.
- Keep a backup connection: choose a return train that leaves a later workable service in reserve. Check disruption notices and avoid depending on the final feasible departure.
- Keep entry plans modest: the cathedral has a separate admission queue. Brunelleschi’s Dome requires a reserved time slot and a climb of 463 steps without a lift.
- Prepare for walking: wear supportive shoes and carry water in warm weather. Much of the center is exposed to sun, and crowds can slow progress.
- Check accessibility: a mostly level center still has uneven paving and crowded streets. Confirm coach steps, walking distances and attraction access if mobility is limited.
- Dress for church visits: cover shoulders and knees when entering religious buildings.
