Fowey is a small town and an UK cargo port located in southern Cornwall (England), at River Fowey's mouth. The river's estuary forms a natural harbour which since the Middle Ages made the town an important trading centre. In the centuries past, the sheltered Fowey Harbour was also often used by privateers / pirates.
Current-day Fowey's economy is based mainly on yachting and tourism. accounting for over 1/2 of the town's jobs. The surrounding scenic coastline is also popular for sea fishing (bass, mullet, mackerel, cuttlefish, lobsters). Many of these species can be seen live in the Fowey Aquarium.
Among the most popular tours offered as cruise shore excursions from Fowey are The Lost Gardens of Heligan (botanical garden near Mevagissey) and the Eden Project (Cornwall).
