Gythion is a port town located in Laconia (Lacedaemonia), southeastern Peloponnese peninsula, Greece. Gythion was ancient Sparta's seaport. It was an important port until it was destroyed (possibly by an earthquake) in the 4th century AD. The town has population around 7,000.
Today, Gythion is a fishing port and among the attractive travel destinations in Greece. Its waterfront is backed by Turkish houses built on the steep forested hill behind. It is also a nice location for a stroll along the harbour or exploring the historic streets higher up, running parallel to the seafront. There are several fishing taverns serving fresh-caught traditional seafood.
Most of ancient Gythion is situated submerged below Lakonian Gulf, but there is an ancient theatre and overgrown acropolis.
