Ikaria Island (Agios Kirykos port locode GRAKI), aka Icaria, is located in the Aegean Sea (the eastern Mediterranean, approx 19 km (12 mi) southwest of Samos Island. Island's name derives from Icarus (son of Daedalus - Labyrinth's creator) who, according to Greek mythology fell into the sea nearby and drowned after flying too close to the sun.

The island is part of the North Aegean region. Its main town is Agios Kirykos (on the eastern coast) with a population of around 3,500.

The other major port town is Evdilos (port locode GREVD) located on central-northern coast, and with population around 3,000.

The Island has a total population of around 9,000, land area approx 255 km2 (99 mi2), and a coastline 164 km (102 mi). The mountainous scenery features verdant slopes and steep rocks, with the highest elevation point 1037 m (3402 ft). Most villages are near the coast, some are in the mountains.
