Ikaria Island (aka Icaria) is located in Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean, approx 19 km (12 ml) southwest of Samos Island. Island's name derives from Icarus (son of Daedalus - Labyrinth's creator) who, according to the Greek mythology fell into the sea nearby and drowned after flying too close to the sun.
The island is part of North Aegean region. Its main town is Agios Kirykos (on the eastern coast) with population around 3,500. The other major town is Evdilos (central-northern coast, population around 3,000). The Island has total population around 9,000, land area approx 255 km2 (99 ml2) and coastline 164 km (102 ml). The mountainous scenery features verdant slopes and steep rocks, with highest elevation point 1037 m (3402 ft). Most villages are near the coast, some are in the mountains.
