Kumano is a port city located in Japan's Mie Prefecture, with population around 18,000. The town is on Kii Peninsula (located near Kii's southern tip, Pacific Ocean) and partially within the Yoshino-Kumano NP (1936-established national park in 3 prefectures - Mie, Nara, Wakayama).

The city was established in 1954 as a merger of Kinomoto Town with 6 surrounding villages. Kiwa Town was merged into Kumano in 2005. City's current-day economy is based on commercial fishing, forestry and agriculture (garden oranges). The city is served by JR Central (Central Japan Railway Company) via Kisei Main Line (Nigishima-Atashika-Hadasu-Odomari-Kumano-Arii). It is also interlinked by 4 highways - national routes 42 (Hamamatsu to Wakayama), 169 (Nara to Shingu-Wakayama), 309 (Kumano to Hirano-ku-Osaka) and 311 (Owase-Mie to Kamitonda-Wakayama).

The best-known local attractions are Kii Peninsula's sacred religious sites (temples and shrines) and pilgrimage routes (Buddhist and Shinto), as well as Kii Mountain's scenery itself - highlighted by Kumano River, as well as scenic streams and numerous waterfalls. The pilgrimage trails include Kumano Sankeimichi, Koyasan choishi-michi, Omine Okugakemichi. The temples include Kimpusen-ji, Ominesan-ji, Seiganto-ji, Fudarakusan-ji, Kongobu-ji, Jison-in. Shinto shrines include Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, Niutsuhime Shrine, Niukanshofu, Yoshino Mikumari, Kimpu, Yoshimizu.

Kumano-Mie is also famous among domestic tourists for having one of Japan's longest beaches (Shichiri Mihama Beach - length 22 km / 14 mi) and the annual Fireworks Festival (held on August 17th, with fireworks launched from boats at sea).
