The village Lochmaldie (translated as "Loch of the Hounds") was established in the late-16th-century. It is located on a sea loch and due to the island's rocky coastline, this is the only settlement on its east coast. Most of North Uist's villages are on the west coast. Lochmaddy is connected via 2 main roads - A865 and A867.

North Uist and South Uist are Outer Hebrides' two main/largest islands. They are linked by causeways (via Benbecula and Grimsay). The archipelago also includes the inhabited islands Èirisgeigh, Uibhist a Deas, Grimsay, Benbecula), Flodaigh, Fraoch-eilean, Uibhist a Tuath, Baleshare, and Berneray.

In the past centuries, Lochmaddy Harbour used to be an important port serving the commercial herring fishing. Today, Lochmaddy is North Uist's ferry port. Regularly-scheduled crossings (by the CalMac-operated ship MV Hebrides) link North Uist with Isle of Skye (Uig). The 1851-founded CalMac (Caledonian MacBrayne) is the main/largest company operating car and passenger ferries between mainland Scotland and 22 of the major Scottish islands off country's west coast. In 2006, CalMac Ferries Ltd became a subsidiary of David MacBrayne Ltd (state-owned/by the Scottish Government).

As cruise port, Lochmaddy was visited in 2019 by the ship Hebridean Princess as part of a 7-day "The Atlantic Isles to the Bishop’s Isles" Scotland cruise roundtrip from homeport Oban. Prices started from ~USD 4800 pp (double-occupancy cabin rates).
