Nhulunbuy is a port town in Australia's Northern Territory region, with population around 3,000. The town is located on Gove Peninsula (Arnhem Land NT) and was created to serve as deepwater port when the bauxite mine and refinery for aluminium were opened in the 1960-70s. The mine was developed by Nabalco (mining and extraction company, 1964-2002). The refinery was closed in 2014, which reduced the town's population by ~1/4.
The town used to house the mineworkers and their families (approx 3,500 people). Nhulunbuy is served by Gove Airport (approx 11 km / 7 mi from downtown) and by its seaport. Daily scheduled flights (by Airnorth) connect with Darwin NT, Cairns QLD and Groote Eylandt Island. The airport also serves several smaller airlines operating charter flights. At approx 20 km (12 mi) from Nhulunbuy is Yirrkala (Indigenous Australian settlement famous for creating authentic aboriginal artworks).
