Nierstein is a Rhine River cruise port and town in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state (Mainz-Bingen district) with population around 9,000. The town is located in Rhine-Hesse region, and between Worms and Mainz.
The current town was built over a Roman settlement (named Bauconica Nova). In 742 AD, the town (as Nierstein) was first mentioned in a donation document.
The amateur palaeontologists Arnulf (father) and Harald (son) Stapf built the Palaontologisches Museum Nierstein, housing rare footprints of amphibians, reptiles and insects from Permian period (47 million years ago), along with unique fossils from around the world. Since some of these specimens are truly unique, the museum is visited also by many renown international specialists.
The town economy's second-largest contributor is tourism, mainly cyclists, hikers and day tourists. Nierstein has 7 hotels and 20+ guesthouses, most of which are in renovated wineries.
