Port Moresby (aka Pom Town) is Papua New Guinea's capital and largest city with population around 410,000. The port is located in the Gulf of Papua (New Guinea Island's southern coast).
- As a trade center, the town emerged in the 2nd half of the 19th century. During WW2 (1939-1945) it was the prime objective for conquest by Imperial Japanese forces (1942–1943).
- The first European discovered it in 1873 - Captain John Moresby (1830-1922), naming the settlement after his father, Admiral Fairfax Moresby (1786-1877). The current city forms National Capital District, including PNG's main business area known as "Town".
- Since the 1990s, the downtown has no restaurants and nightlife venues. The affluent housing region north of downtown remains, though there are currently few residential areas with substantial apartment buildings.
- In recent years, Port Moresby enjoys an economical boom, especially in real estate - new office towers, housing, shopping malls. The city's waterfront area was redeveloped with apartments, shopping centers, bars and restaurants.
