Pulau Belitung (aka Billiton) is an Indonesian island located in Java Sea, off Sumatra Island's east coast. The island has land area of approx 4800 km2 (1853 mi2) and population around 280,000.
The main port town is Tanjung Pandan. Belitung is popular for its pepper, tin, iron ore, silica sands, clay. Belitung is a major producer of pepper, palm oil, coconut, fish products. Locals are employed mainly as fishermen, miners and farmers.
The island is accessible with 8 daily 1-hour flights from Jakarta and 2 daily flights from Pangkal Pinang, with duration 30-50 min each.
Belitung's main tourist destinations are its beaches and offshore islets and islands. The most popular beaches are Tanjung Kelayang and Tanjung Tinggi, both rocky and with clear blue waters. The most visited nearby islands are Babi, Kelayang, Batu Berlayar, Pasir (tidal island made of sand), Burong (walk access from Tanjung Binga beach at low tide) and Lengkuas (best for snorkeling and featuring an old lighthouse).
