Sandakan is the second-largest port city located on Borneo Island's eastern coast. By population (around 160,000, metro over 400,000) the city is ranked Sabah State's second-largest - after Kota Kinabalu (population around 450,000) located on Borneo's northeastern coast.

Between 1881-1897, Sandakan was the capital of the British North Borneo Company (aka North Borneo Chartered Company).

Other Malaysian Borneo ports are Bintulu and Kuching.
