South Plaza Island (officially Isla Plaza Sur) is located off the east coast of Santa Cruz Island, in Galapagos Islands archipelago. It has land area of 0.13 km2 and highest elevation 23 m. above sea level The island was formed by lava streaming up from the ocean seabed.
Despite its small size, the isle is home to numerous species and is famous for its flora. That is why South Plaza is very popular with visitors. It is possible to see a large number of birds on the steep banks, such as nesting swallow-tailed gulls or red-billed tropicbirds. However, most of all, enjoy the unique view from atop or stroll along the base of the cliff is a pleasurable experience. The prickly pear cactus trees (Opuntia echios) are very attractive. The large colony of Galapagos land iguanas is another interesting feature of South Plaza. Depending on the season, the Sesuvium ground vegetation may change its colour from orange and purple during the dry season to intense green during the rainy season.
