Tsuruga (port locode JPTRG) is a port city in Japan's Fukui Prefecture (Wakasa Province). By population (around 70,000), the city is ranked province's largest. Among the cities on the Japan Sea coast, it is the nearest to the Pacific Ocean. Tsuruga is on Wakasa Bay and approx 50 km (31 mi) south of Fukui, approx 90 km (56 mi) northwest of Nagoya and approx 115 km (71 mi) from Osaka.
The city's economy is mixed and mainly focused on services provided to Wakasa Province. The seaport has a dedicated containership terminal, bulk cargo terminal, a coal-fired power plant, a furniture factory, 2 textile mills, a playground equipment manufacturer, Panasonic factory. Energy research and education also drive its economy.
