Union Island is part of St Vincent and the Grenadines - sovereign state in Caribbean (Windward Islands, Lesser Antillesarchipelago). The island is located approx 200 km (124 ml) southwest of Barbados and can be seen from Carriacou island and the mainland (St Vincent Island, to the south). Union Island's two principal towns are Ashton and Clifton. Island's total population is around 3,000. English is the official language.
The island is served by Union Island Airport with international and domestic flights to the Caribbean islands Bequia, St Lucia, St Vincent, Canouan, Carriacou, Barbados, Martinique, Grenada. Charter flights are offered to Antigua and Mustique.
Union Island has length 3 ml (5 km), width 1 ml (2 km) and highest elevation point (Mt Taboi) 999 ft (304 m) above sea level. After the Arawak and Caribs (original islanders), the island has been in possession of britain and France, serving African slave traders and plantation proprietors. When slavery was abolished, main economies became fishing and farming.
Today, both Ashton Harbour and Clifton Harbour serve yachts, cruise ships, day-charter boats and tour boats. The island has a scuba diving tour company, numerous bars, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, internet cafes, several guest houses and hotels, a small health clinic, schools, churches. Happy Island is an artificial island located in the middle of Clifton Harbour.
