Uwajima is a port city in Ehime Prefecture, located on Japan's Shikoku Island. The city covers a total area of approx 470 km2 (181 mi2) and has population around 90,000.

The village was founded in the late-16th-century. When Takatora Tohdo became the Lord of Uwa region, he ordered Marugushi Castle's restoration. The current-day city was established as a merger of parts of Kitauwa District and Uwajima. In the early-17th-century, Uwajima Castle became a center of culture, education and industry.

Uwa region became Uwajima Prefecture in 1871 (as Kamiyama Prefecture). The current-day prefecture was formed in 1873 as a merger with Ishizuchi Prefecture. Its capital was moved to Matsuyama after Ehime Prefecture was founded.

Date Family Museum in Uwajima has numerous historically important artefacts about the region's history and its rulers (Daimyo family Date). Uwajima Castle is one of the 12 Japanese castles to feature an original donjon (main keep) constructed in the Edo Period. The city is also popular for the unusual fertility shrine (Taga Shrine) with a realistic phallus carved from a 9-ft (2-m) long log. Next to the shrine is the graphic sex museum with paintings and artefacts from around the world.

Each July here is held the Gaiya Festival (aka Warei Shrine Festival or Uwajima Ushi-oni Festival), which festivities include a bullfight, a Gaiya dance contest) and ushioni teams (parading on downtown's main street). The word "Gaiya" translates to "awesome".
