Bingen (Bingen am Rhein) is a Rhine River cruise port. The town has population around 25,000, and is located in the district Sigmaringen (Baden-Wurttemberg) Germany.
Hornstein Castle Ruin (former Reichsfestung) is Birgen's main tourist attraction. It was noted for the first time in 1271. Between 1818-1869 the castle served as a prison and asylum. In 1879 it was partly demolished. Castle's chapel, containing medieval altars by Magnus Hops, is still in pretty shape and is currently used for religious ceremonies. Among the famous people who lived in Bingen is Johann Schreck S.J. (born in 1576 in Bingen; died in 1630 in Beijing), botanist and astronomer, also known as Terrentius Constantiensis, Deng Zhen Lohan, Deng Yuhan Hanpo, Jesuit, Missionary to China.
