Mina Salman is a seaport situated in Manama, Bahrain. It was a natural harbour prior to port's establishment in 1962 covering 80 hectares. Mina Salman is the primary customs point and cargo port of Bahrain. It features 15 container berths, which enabling it to handle 2.5M tonnes per year. The port is named after the grandfather of the current King, Salman ibn Isa al-Khalifa.
Manama harbour, where is the location of Mina Salman, was first mentioned in Islamic texts dated to 1345 AD. In 1521 the region was occupied by the Portuguese. In 1602 the Persians gained control. Al Khalifa dynasty, still on top, have ruled in Bahrain since 1783. Manama harbour was not quite suitable for ocean liners, and some ships had to anchor up to six kilometers offshore. Approach channels were constructed in 1954; a pier was built in 1956, predominately used by dhows. In 1958, Manama became a free port; in 1962 - a deep water wharf made up of 6 berths was constructed, allowing for the first time cargo to be loaded directly onto the port. During the 1960s, the port had storage facilities, equipment and refrigeration for handling large vessels. In 1975, 1.5M tonnes of cargo was handled, which led to overcrowding. In the next decade the Bahraini government launched a series of expansions, including the opening of Mina Salman Container Terminal (1979). The port was the only port in the Persian Gulf that was completely operated by citizens. More than 75% of its cargo is containerised.
On December 6, 2014 the UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon announced an agreement signed with Bahrain in order to establish a Royal Navy base (HMS Jufair) at Mina Salman. The new base would support Royal Navy vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, in addition to Royal Navy mine hunter force based in Bahrain. Work on construction began in October 2015.
