Located on the Red Sea coast of Egypt, Safaga is not particularly attractive but is actually the key to Upper Egypt and the Valley of Nile, reached by a journey across empty Eastern Desert to Karnak and Luxor. Nowhere else in Egypt do the monuments of the Pharaohs unfold such a vivid and compelling story than here amid the impressing Temple of Luxor and Karnak (the latter with more than 100 acres of hypostyle halls, sacred buildings and pylons - a scale which surpasses all other temple complexes in the ancient world). At the West Bank necropolis of ancient Thebes, is the setting of celebrated Valley of the Kings and the tombs of the Pharaohs from 18th to 20th dynasties.
The ancient Egyptians called the city Weset, though it was known as Thebes for many years, a name given to it by the Greeks. During the 18th and 19th dynasties of the Pharaohs, the ancient Thebes reached its height of glory and the population was believed to have reached 1 million. The Pharaohs built some of the most impressive architecture in the world for its time over the years that followed. Amenophis II was responsible for the initial building of a true architectural wonder - the great Temple of Luxor.
