AmaWaterways introduces “City Escapes” river cruise program in Europe

AmaWaterways has announced the introduction of a new series of European river cruises under the name City Escapes.

The new program is designed to provide extended stays in several major cities along the Seine, Rhine, and Danube. The departures are scheduled primarily during quieter travel periods, with the intention of allowing passengers additional time ashore and reduced congestion at popular destinations.

The concept emphasizes slower-paced travel and deeper cultural engagement. Instead of the standard river cruise format with brief calls, the itineraries incorporate extended overnight stays and prolonged daylight navigation, enabling passengers to spend at least 24 hours in several principal cities, including Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Strasbourg, and Budapest.

Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways, explained in a company statement that the program had been developed for travellers seeking a more deliberate way to experience European destinations. She indicated that the itineraries were intended to provide sufficient time for visitors to explore museums, culinary traditions, and historic districts without the constraints of a tightly scheduled itinerary, adding that the company regarded time as one of the central elements of luxury travel.

The first departures are scheduled to begin in 2026, with additional sailings planned for 2027 across 3 river regions.

Along the Seine, the itineraries provide extended stays in Paris as well as calls at Rouen and areas of Normandy. Passengers in Paris may explore districts such as the historic Île de la Cité, the site of Notre-Dame Cathedral, or visit neighbourhoods such as Le Marais. Optional excursions include visits to institutions such as the Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Musée Marmottan Monet, while onboard programmes feature culinary demonstrations dedicated to French dessert traditions. In Normandy, shore excursions may include visits to the Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches, the harbour town of Honfleur, or the modernist port city of Le Havre. In Rouen, activities range from guided walks through the medieval centre to museum visits and excursions to nearby châteaux.

Rhine itineraries place emphasis on cultural and historical destinations including Breisach, Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Cologne, and Amsterdam. Among the excursions offered are visits to Colmar and the Bartholdi Museum, as well as tours through the Alsace wine region and to the hilltop fortress of Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg. Scenic cruising through the Rhine Gorge forms part of the voyage before the journey concludes in Amsterdam, where passengers may visit the Rijksmuseum.

On the Danube, the itineraries combine extended river navigation through landscapes such as the Wachau Valley and the Danube Bend with cultural programmes in cities including Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Linz, and Passau. In Budapest, excursions may include exploration of the historic Buda and hikes to Gellért Hill. Bratislava programmes feature walking tours of the old town and local tastings, while in Vienna passengers may attend a dinner and concert at the House of Strauss. Further excursions from Linz include visits to Salzburg or the historic town of Český Krumlov. The voyage concludes in Passau, often referred to as the “City of Three Rivers,” where guided walks and local food tastings form part of the shore programme.

The cruise line has also expanded its land programme with new pre- and post-cruise extensions in London and Rome. These extensions include cultural excursions and culinary experiences, such as visits to Vatican City and guided tours of Westminster, as well as evenings in the West End for theatre performances.

To mark the introduction of the program, AmaWaterways has announced a promotional offer available for selected departures booked between March 6th and June 30th, 2026. The promotion includes cruise fare reductions of up to US$1,000 per stateroom, a complimentary cabin upgrade, and onboard credit of US$50 per passenger.
