Agios Nikolaos (port locode GRANI), also Aghios Nikolaos, is a coastal town situated on the Greek island of Crete. It lies east of island's capital Heraklion, west of the town of Sitia and north of the town of Ierapetra.
In 2011, the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, taking in part of the surrounding villages, had 27,070 inhabitants. The town of Agios Nikolaos is a municipality of Crete region. It sits partially on the ruins of the ancient city Lato pros Kamara. The total area of the municipal unit is 317.8 km2 (122.7 ml2).
Agios Nikolaos was established by Dorian occupants of Lato in the late Bronze Age, at a time when the security of Lato hillfort became lesser concern and easy access to Agios Nikolaos' harbour became more important.
The name of the city means Saint Nicholas. Agios Nikolaos is a common placename in Cyprus and Greece, since Saint Nicholas is patron saint of sailors and all of Greece.
The archaeological site of Priniatikos Pyrgos is near the town. It was first settled in Final Neolithic, circa 3000 BC. Activity on it continued throughout Minoan Bronze Age and Classical Greek and Roman periods.
Agios Nikolaos is accessible from the whole of Europe and the mainland through Nikos Kazantzakis airport, as well as the daily ferry services in Heraklion. Just a short ferry ride away from the town is Spinalonga Island, an old Venetian fortress turned ex-leper colony in the early 20th century.
Agios Nikolaos is best known as a tourist town serving as a hub to the 20 or so small villages and farms which make up that part of Lassithi. Major tourist attractions include the small island Agioi Pantes, the lagoon Lake Voulismeni, the archaeological museum, local flora exhibition “Iris” and several fairs.
Tourism is Western European, with the Greek tourism concentrated in mid-August, but there are a lot of Russian tourists in East Crete. The Lake Voulismeni lagoon has a small park with a trail, ducks, pigeons, traditional fishing boats, many cafes and an amphitheatre. During the 60's the modern Agios Nikolaos city became internationally recognized as it was "discovered" by renowned cinema directors (Walt Disney, Jules Dassin, etc.), BBC producers and others. The short story 'Not After Midnight' of Daphne du Maurier was set in and around Agios Nikolaos.
Agios Nikolaos is one of the easier Crete ports to explore without an excursion. The cruise harbor is immediately beside the town, with Lake Voulismeni, the waterfront and central shopping streets within a short walk. For a longer day, Spinalonga, Elounda and Kritsa are realistic independent trips with advance transport planning.
Independent sightseeing: Easy independently for Agios Nikolaos itself. Independent with some planning or transport for Spinalonga, Elounda and Kritsa.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Agios Nikolaos is not exclusively a tender port. Cruise ships can berth at the town harbor, and recent port improvements allow vessels up to about 250 meters long to dock. The exact arrangement still depends on the ship and berth allocation, so some calls may use an offshore anchorage and tenders.
Whether arriving directly at the quay or by tender, passengers normally come ashore in the central harbor area. There is no long industrial-port transfer: the town center can be reached on foot, with Lake Voulismeni roughly 5–10 minutes away.
- Walking: Best option for the town itself. The waterfront is mostly straightforward and paved.
- Taxi: Most practical for Spinalonga via Plaka, Kritsa, Panagia Kera or Ancient Lato when time ashore is limited.
- Public bus: KTEL services connect Agios Nikolaos with Elounda, Plaka and Kritsa. Frequencies are substantially better during the summer season, so check the timetable for the actual port-call date.
- Shuttle: A transfer into the center is normally unnecessary because the harbor is already beside the town.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Lake Voulismeni and Central Agios Nikolaos
Allow: 1.5–3 hours. Transport: Walk. Difficulty: Easy.
The simplest port day is also a worthwhile one. Walk from the harbor to Lake Voulismeni, follow the cafés and pedestrian streets around the waterfront, continue to Kitroplateia and return along the coast. The lower waterfront is easy walking, although reaching some viewpoints above the lake involves slopes or steps.
This option works especially well on a short call because almost no time is lost to transportation.
Archaeological Museum and Waterfront
Allow: 2–3 hours. Transport: Walk. Difficulty: Easy.
The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos contains finds from eastern Crete and is close enough to combine with the lake and harbor on foot. It is a useful alternative to a long archaeological excursion elsewhere on Crete. State museums commonly close on Tuesdays and opening arrangements can change, so confirm before making it the focus of the day.
Spinalonga and Plaka
Allow: About 4–5 hours. Transport: Taxi, seasonal bus or organized excursion plus boat. Difficulty: Moderate because of uneven stone surfaces on Spinalonga.
Spinalonga is the strongest excursion option from Agios Nikolaos. Plaka is about 16 km (9.9 mi) from town and roughly 20–30 minutes away by road. Boats make the short crossing from Plaka to the island; Elounda, about 10 km (6.2 mi) from Agios Nikolaos, is another departure point.
Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours to explore the fortified island itself. Seasonal KTEL buses run from Agios Nikolaos toward Plaka and Elounda, but a taxi gives cruise passengers more control over the return journey. Boat services and archaeological-site access are seasonal, so check both before leaving the port.
Independent with planning. An organized excursion becomes preferable on a short call, when tendering reduces time ashore, or if public transport timings leave little margin.
Kritsa, Panagia Kera and Ancient Lato
Allow: 3–4 hours. Transport: Taxi is easiest; bus works for Kritsa. Difficulty: Easy in the village, moderate at Lato.
Kritsa lies about 10 km (6.2 mi) inland and is a practical alternative for passengers interested in a traditional Cretan village rather than a boat trip. The Byzantine church of Panagia Kera is about 1 km (0.6 mi) before the village.
Ancient Lato lies another 3 km (1.9 mi) beyond Kritsa and is one of the best-preserved Classical-Hellenistic towns on Crete. It is about an 18-minute drive from Agios Nikolaos. Combining all three locations is easiest by taxi or arranged vehicle; walking from Kritsa to Lato takes around 45 minutes each way and is inefficient during a cruise call.
Self-Guided Walking Tour
Harbor, Lake and Waterfront Loop
Distance: about 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: about 35–45 minutes. Recommended total time: 1.5–2.5 hours. Difficulty: Easy, with optional slopes and steps around the lake viewpoints.
- Cruise harbor or tender landing – leave the port on foot and follow the waterfront toward the center.
- Lake Voulismeni – walk along the lower lakeside promenade and the channel connecting the lake with the sea.
- Upper lake viewpoint – take the short uphill streets or steps for a higher view over the lake; skip this section if mobility is limited.
- Central pedestrian streets – continue through the compact shopping area behind the lake.
- Kitroplateia waterfront – reach the small central beach and seaside promenade; this is also suitable for a short swim in warm weather.
- Harbor return – follow the waterfront back toward the cruise quay.
The route can easily be shortened. Passengers visiting the Archaeological Museum can add it near the beginning or end of the walk, allowing additional time for the collection.
Beaches
Kitroplateia is the easiest beach for cruise passengers because it is within the central walking area. It is suitable for combining a swim with Lake Voulismeni and lunch rather than spending the entire port call at the beach.
Ammos Beach, beside the marina, is another walkable town option. For passengers primarily interested in swimming, these central beaches avoid the transport time and return risk associated with travelling farther along the coast.
When an Organized Excursion Makes Sense
Most visitors do not need a tour to see Agios Nikolaos itself. An excursion is more useful for Spinalonga when the call is short, for multi-stop itineraries combining Spinalonga with Elounda or inland villages, and for attractions farther across Crete.
Longer trips toward central Crete consume much more of the port call in road travel. If planning a distant archaeological or scenic destination, an organized excursion or private driver usually provides a more practical schedule than relying on several public-transport connections.
Practical Tips
- Confirm whether your ship will dock or tender; tender operations reduce usable time ashore.
- For Spinalonga, check both the road transport and the return boat schedule before departing Agios Nikolaos.
- KTEL schedules change seasonally, particularly services to smaller destinations such as Plaka and Kritsa.
- Ancient sites can have uneven stone surfaces and little shade; suitable footwear, water and sun protection are useful.
- State museums and several archaeological sites in the area may close on Tuesdays.
- When travelling outside Agios Nikolaos, leave a substantial margin for traffic, waiting for buses or boats, and any tender queue required to return to the ship.
