Aix-en-Provence is a Rhone River cruise port and city in southern France, located approx 30 km (19 mi) north of Marseille. The city is also in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region, and has population around 143,000.
Major tourst sights include:
- Cours Mirabeau (avenue planted with double-rowed trees and decorated by fountains). Cours Mirabeau divides the town into 2 sections and has its most famous brasserie (Deux Garçons) opened since 1792.
- Holy Saviour Cathedral (aka Aix Cathedral) is to the city's medieval part, and built on a former Roman forum,
- Palais de Justice is France's 2nd most important Appeal Court (after Paris) located close to the former Palace of the Counts.
Aix is dubbed "city of a thousand fountains", the most notable of which are the Four Dolphins (17th-century, in Quartier Mazarin) and 3 fountains located down-central Cours Mirabeau.
Aix-en-Provence is an inland city, not a navigable river or seaport, so cruise ships and riverboats do not dock here. On Rhône cruise-tour itineraries that list Aix-en-Provence, including current Tauck MS Lumiere programs, the Aix visit is a land segment reached by coach after or before the actual river portion. Once passengers are dropped in central Aix, however, sightseeing is very easy to do independently.
At a Glance
- Independent sightseeing: Easy once in the city centre.
- Port access: There is no cruise terminal, berth or tender landing in Aix-en-Provence.
- River cruise passengers: Follow the cruise operator's coach transfer and meeting point. Current Rhône itineraries use Aix as a land-tour stop rather than a place where the riverboat docks.
- Ocean cruise passengers: Aix is also a common excursion from Marseille, about 30 km (18.6 mi) away. The Aix tourist office gives roughly 40 minutes by road from Marseille's port to the city centre, although traffic can increase this.
- Best for: Old-town walking, fountains, markets, architecture, Cézanne sites and museums.
- Useful time in Aix: About 2–3 hours covers the historic centre; 4–5 hours allows a museum or Cézanne site as well.
Getting to Aix-en-Provence
River cruise-tour passengers
The Rhône does not run through Aix-en-Provence. Riverboats operating the Rhône and Saône use actual river ports such as Arles, Avignon and Lyon. On current Tauck MS Lumiere itineraries, the river section reaches Arles before the itinerary continues overland through Aix and the Riviera. Use the operator-provided transfer rather than trying to reach the vessel independently from Aix.
From a Marseille ocean cruise
Aix-en-Provence is about 30 km (18.6 mi) north of Marseille. Most large cruise ships use the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal complex, which is outside central Marseille, so an independent trip to Aix involves additional ground transport from the terminal. Taxi or pre-arranged private transport is simpler than combining several public-transport stages.
An organized shore excursion is preferable when the Marseille call is short or when several ships are in port. Independent travel is more practical with a long call and a generous return margin for motorway traffic and terminal access.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Old Aix and Cours Mirabeau
Allow 2–3 hours. This is the best choice for a short visit and is easy independently. Begin around the Fontaine de la Rotonde, walk along tree-lined Cours Mirabeau, explore the narrow streets of Vieil Aix and continue through the market squares to Saint-Sauveur Cathedral.
The route is compact and largely pedestrian. Expect stone paving and occasional uneven surfaces rather than serious hills.
Cézanne's Aix
Allow 3–4 hours. Paul Cézanne was born and worked in Aix, and locations connected with him are scattered through the centre. Visitors with more time can continue uphill to Atelier des Lauves, his final studio.
The studio has limited capacity, so advance reservation is advisable. The walk north from the historic centre is noticeably more demanding than the central sightseeing circuit, particularly in hot weather.
Musée Granet and Quartier Mazarin
Allow 2.5–4 hours. Combine the elegant streets of Quartier Mazarin and the Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins with Musée Granet, which has collections ranging from older European art to modern works and material associated with Cézanne.
This works well for passengers who prefer one substantial indoor visit rather than trying to cover every landmark. Check the museum's opening day before relying on it as the main activity.
Sainte-Victoire and the Cézanne countryside
Allow at least 4–5 hours. Mont Sainte-Victoire and the countryside east of Aix are better treated as a separate excursion. Sites associated with Cézanne include viewpoints and the Bibémus area, but they are not a convenient extension of a short old-town walk.
Organized excursion recommended for cruise passengers because transport and timing are more important here. Do not attempt a substantial countryside hike when your return depends on a fixed cruise transfer.
Self-Guided Walking Tours
Easy: Old Aix, Fountains and Cathedral
Distance: about 3 km (1.9 mi)
Pure walking time: about 45–60 minutes
Recommended total time: 2.5–3.5 hours
Difficulty: Easy, with some stone paving and uneven old-town streets.
- Fontaine de la Rotonde – Start here or at your operator's nearby central drop-off point.
- Cours Mirabeau – Walk the city's principal tree-lined avenue and see its fountains and historic façades.
- Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins – Make a short detour into Quartier Mazarin for this 17th-century fountain.
- Saint-Jean-de-Malte and Musée Granet – Stop outside the church or allow extra time for the museum.
- Place des Prêcheurs – Enter the historic centre and continue through its pedestrian streets.
- Place Richelme – A convenient place for a market or café stop when stalls are operating.
- Place de l'Hôtel de Ville – See the town hall, clock tower and surrounding square.
- Saint-Sauveur Cathedral – Finish at the cathedral before returning through Vieil Aix toward the Rotonde and your transfer point.
This is the most practical route when passengers have only a few hours of free time. Allow additional time if entering the cathedral, shopping or stopping at a café.
Moderate: Old Aix to Cézanne's Studio and Viewpoint
Distance: approximately 5.5 km (3.4 mi) round trip
Pure walking time: about 80–95 minutes
Recommended total time: 3.5–4.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate, with a sustained uphill section north of the old town.
- Fontaine de la Rotonde – Begin in the lower city centre.
- Cours Mirabeau – Walk through the heart of Aix.
- Vieil Aix – Follow the central streets toward the cathedral area.
- Saint-Sauveur Cathedral – A useful final central stop before beginning the climb.
- Atelier des Lauves – Visit Cézanne's studio if you have a reserved entry time.
- Jardin/Terrain des Peintres area – Continue toward the traditional viewpoint associated with Cézanne's paintings of Sainte-Victoire if time and access permit.
- Return to central Aix – Retrace the route downhill and aim to reach the coach meeting area well before departure.
This route is less suitable during extreme summer heat or when the cruise operator gives only a short period of independent time.
Practical Tips
- For passengers on a cruise-tour, the important deadline is usually the coach departure time, not a ship gangway in Aix. Be back at the stated meeting point early.
- The historic centre is compact, and most major sights can be reached on foot once you are dropped off centrally.
- Stone paving, narrow streets and occasional curbs can make the old town slower for passengers with limited mobility, although the main Cours Mirabeau area is comparatively straightforward.
- Summer afternoons can be very hot. The longer walk toward Cézanne's studio is better attempted with water and adequate time.
- Do not build an independent Marseille-to-Aix itinerary around the minimum road time. Motorway congestion and the extra journey through the Marseille port complex can materially lengthen the return.
- If your operator has already included a guided Aix visit, free time is usually best spent exploring nearby streets, cafés, markets or one preselected attraction rather than arranging another distant excursion.
