Anguilla Island (port locode AIRBY) is one of the UK's West Indies (Leeward Islands -  British overseas territories). The island covers a total area of approx 91 km2 (35 mi2) and has population around 18,000. The island's principal port is Sandy Ground. Anguilla is approx 230 mi (370 km) to the east from Puerto Rico and approx 100 mi (170 km) to the west from BVI.

This is a long, flat, scrub-covered coral island, located north of Windward Islands (aka Barlovento, in the Lesser Antilles). Anguilla is one of the Renaissance Islands, separated from BVI (British Virgin Islands) via Anegada Passage.

The island's terrain consists entirely of dunes, beaches and low bluffs, with highest elevation point (Crocus Hill/on the northern coast) 213 ft / 65 m.

Among the island's most popular for travel vacation places are its many bays, including Little, Barnes, Rendezvous, Road Bays, Shoal. The coastline and pristine beaches are significant for the local tourism-based economy. Because of the warm tropical climate, Anguilla's beaches are used year-round.

The British Caribbean overseas territory Anguilla consists of Anguilla Island itself (the largest) plus numerous other small isles and cays, most of which are uninhabited.  Anguilla is also a well-known tax haven, with no capital gains, profit, estate or other direct taxation forms on either corporations or individuals. In April 2011, Anguilla faced with the mounting deficit and introduced its first form of income tax - the 3% "Interim Stabilisation Levy".

Anguilla Island is served by regularly scheduled ferries from St Martin Island. Travel time is 20 min - from Marigot St Martin to Blowing Point. Ferry operations start from 7 am daily. Charter service is offered from Blowing Point to Princess Juliana Airport - the most common transportation between Anguilla and St Martin.

On December 24, 2018, was inaugurated the newly refurbished and improved “Big Jim” building at Blowing Point Terminal. The new facility was officially opened by Anguilla's Governor and Deputy Governor. The UK government committed nearly USD 10 million for the project.

At a Glance

Independent with some planning or transport. Cruise ships normally anchor in Road Bay and tender passengers to the pier at Sandy Ground. The beach and waterfront village are easy to explore on foot, but taxis are needed for Anguilla’s other beaches and sights. There is no public bus service.

Getting from the Cruise Port

The tender pier is directly beside Sandy Ground Beach rather than a conventional cruise terminal. Beach bars, restaurants and the village waterfront begin within a few minutes’ walk.

  • On foot: Practical within Sandy Ground only. Roads beyond the village often lack sidewalks and shade.
  • Taxi: The simplest option for Shoal Bay East, Meads Bay, Rendezvous Bay, The Valley and island tours. Fares are regulated, but confirm the total price and pickup time before leaving.
  • Rental car: Possible with the required temporary local permit, but rarely worthwhile for a short call unless arranged in advance. Traffic drives on the left.

Tender operations can take time and may be affected by sea conditions. Allow an additional return margin rather than arriving for the final tender at the last moment.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Stay at Sandy Ground

Recommended time: 2–4 hours. This is the easiest independent choice. Walk directly from the tender pier to the long beach, swim when conditions are suitable, and have lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants. Facilities are more concentrated here than at many of Anguilla’s quieter beaches.

Take a Taxi to Shoal Bay East

Recommended time: 4–5 hours, including transport. Shoal Bay East is one of the island’s best-known beaches, with a long strip of pale sand, clear water and several places for refreshments. The drive from Sandy Ground normally takes about 20–25 minutes each way. Arrange a definite return pickup with the driver.

Choose Meads Bay or Rendezvous Bay

Recommended time: 3–5 hours. Both offer long sandy shores and a quieter beach-focused day. Meads Bay is generally about 15–20 minutes from Sandy Ground by taxi, while Rendezvous Bay is roughly 20 minutes away. Confirm access to food, restrooms, chairs and umbrellas before the taxi departs, as services vary along each beach.

Combine The Valley with an Island Drive

Recommended time: 3–4 hours. A taxi tour can combine The Valley, viewpoints, salt ponds, small settlements and one or two beaches. Heritage stops may include Wallblake House and local museum collections, but access and opening arrangements should be checked before visiting. This option is better for passengers interested in the island beyond its beaches.

Boat Trip to Sandy Island

Recommended time: about 4 hours. This small offshore cay is reached by local boat from Sandy Ground and is suited to swimming, snorkeling and a relaxed lunch. Space, operating days and sea conditions can limit access, so reserve through the ship or a reputable operator and verify that the return schedule fits the tender deadline.

Self-Guided Sandy Ground Walk

Distance: approximately 2 km (1.2 mi) round trip
Pure walking time: about 30 minutes
Recommended total time: 1.5–2.5 hours with beach and refreshment stops
Difficulty: Easy; mostly level, but hot and with limited shade

  1. Tender pier: Begin at the passenger landing and orient yourself before leaving the waterfront.
  2. Sandy Ground Beach: Follow the shoreline through the village, stopping for views across Road Bay.
  3. Historic salt-industry remains: Look for the old pumphouse and surviving traces of the area’s salt-working past.
  4. Road Salt Pond: View the large pond behind the beachfront settlement. Birdlife varies with season and water conditions.
  5. Northern beachfront: Continue along the village strip as far as comfortable, then return by the same route.
  6. Beach stop: Finish with swimming or refreshments close to the tender pier.

This route keeps passengers near the landing and avoids walking on the island’s exposed roads. Do not attempt to reach The Valley or distant beaches on foot.

Practical Tips

  • Anguilla is primarily a beach and scenic-drive destination; passengers wanting several island highlights should use a taxi tour or organized excursion.
  • Ask whether a quoted taxi fare is one way or round trip and arrange the return journey before the driver leaves.
  • Carry some cash because card acceptance by taxis and small beach businesses may be limited.
  • Bring sun protection and water. Shade is scarce away from beachfront businesses.
  • Swimming and snorkeling depend on wind, waves and currents; follow local advice.
  • Plan to be back at the tender pier well before the ship’s stated final tender time.
