Bay of Islands (Russell, New Zealand)

Bay of Islands is a tender port, with passengers normally landing at Waitangi Wharf. Waitangi, Paihia and Russell are all realistic independent options, while longer boat trips and countryside attractions require advance planning.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Allow approximately 2–3 hours for the two museums, Treaty House, carved meeting house, ceremonial waka and grounds. Admission includes a 50-minute guided tour and a 30-minute Māori cultural experience, making this the strongest choice for understanding New Zealand’s history and culture. It is practical independently, although checking performance and tour times in advance helps avoid a long wait.

Paihia and the Waterfront

Paihia is the local transport and visitor hub, with cafés, shops, a beach and boat departures concentrated around the wharf. One to two hours is sufficient for a relaxed visit. It works well after the Treaty Grounds or while waiting for a ferry, but the town itself has fewer major sights than Waitangi or Russell.

Historic Russell

Take the passenger ferry from Paihia and allow about 2–3 hours, including the crossings. Russell’s waterfront, Christ Church, Pompallier Mission grounds and historic streets are easy to explore on foot. The climb to Flagstaff Hill adds broad bay views but includes a sustained uphill section and is best for passengers comfortable with slopes.

Bay Cruise and Hole in the Rock

Scenic cruises through the islands commonly take around 4–4.5 hours and may include Cape Brett, the Hole in the Rock or an island stop. This should normally be treated as the main activity of the day rather than combined with a full Waitangi and Russell itinerary. Passage through the rock and wildlife sightings depend on sea conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

Haruru Falls and the Waitangi River

Haruru Falls can be reached by taxi or as part of a guided outing. The forest and mangrove track between the falls and Waitangi is approximately 5.2–6 km (3.2–3.7 mi) each way and takes about 2.5 hours one way. A return walk is too time-consuming for most port calls; arranging transport at one end is more practical.

Waitangi to Paihia Waterfront Walk

Route: Waitangi Wharf → Waitangi Treaty Grounds entrance → Waitangi Bridge → Te Ti Bay → Paihia waterfront → Paihia Wharf.

• Recommended time: 1–1.5 hours without entering the Treaty Grounds, or 3–4 hours when combined with a full visit.

Start at the tender landing and follow the waterfront towards the Treaty Grounds. Continue across the bridge, pass Te Ti Bay and follow the shore into central Paihia. From Paihia Wharf, return to Waitangi using the cruise shuttle rather than retracing the route if tender departure time is approaching.

Russell Heritage and Flagstaff Hill

Route: Russell Wharf → waterfront → Christ Church → Pompallier Mission area → northern end of Kororāreka Bay → Flagstaff Hill → Russell Wharf.

• Distance: Approximately 3–4 km (1.9–2.5 mi), depending on the streets and hill route used.
• Pure walking time: About 60–75 minutes.
• Recommended time: 2–2.5 hours in Russell, plus ferry travel and waiting time.
• Difficulty: Moderate because of the climb to Flagstaff Hill; the village-only portion is easy.

Passengers wanting a gentler route can omit Flagstaff Hill and remain around the waterfront and historic village. Check the return ferry before beginning the climb.

• Check the ship’s daily notice for the confirmed tender landing, shuttle arrangements and final tender time.
• Allow extra time for tender queues; returning to Waitangi 45–60 minutes before the required onboard time is sensible.
• Do not schedule Russell and a long bay cruise tightly together, as both depend on fixed boat departures.
• Sea conditions can delay tendering and alter local boat trips.
• For excursions beyond Waitangi, Paihia and Russell, organized transport is preferable because local public transport is limited and return timing matters.
• Bring sun protection and a light waterproof layer. Conditions on the water can feel cooler and windier than ashore.
