Port Ceuta (Spanish Morocco) serves mainly ferries from mainland Spain (Algeciras). Together with Melilla, Ceuta is one of two Spanish cities in Africa (northwest African coast) classed as autonomous territories of Spain. The largest ferry companies serving Spanish Morocco are BALEARIA, TRASMEDITERRANEA, Naviera ARMAS, FRS Iberia.
Ceuta is a Mediterranean port city covering a total area of approx 19 km2 (7 ml2) and with population around 85,000. It borders with Morocco (to the west) and is separated from Europe (Iberian Peninsula) via Strait of Gibraltar.
Melilla and Ceuta were free ports before 2011, when Spain joined the EU. These are also Spain's low tax zones, historically free ports, oil ports, fishing ports and also military strongholds. Currenty, the city's economy depends heavily on the seaport, retail shopping, tax-free trade (with Morocco).
Morocco continues to claim both cities, plus Perejil Island and other African territories. Span's position is that Ceuta and Melilla are parts of Spain (not a colony), being established in the 15th century, before Morocco was founded as country (in 710 AD).
- The landscape is dominated by Monte Anyera (349 m / 1145 ft) along the western frontier with Morocco. Currently, the mountain is guarded by a military fort.
- Monte Hacho (on Almina Peninsula) overlooks Port Ceuta and is among the possible locations for southern Pillars of Hercules (Greek legend). The other possibility is Jebel Musa.
- Ceuta attracts large numbers of illegal immigrants from Africa who try to use it as entry point to Europe. As a result the enclave is now surrounded by double fences (6 m high).
Ceuta Heliport
The city is served by Ceuta Heliport linking it to Malaga (mainland Spain) since 1996. Ceuta's "airport" serves around 20,000 passengers annually (or approx 2600 flights).
- The heliport is in the seaport area, located between the cargo dock and the fishing port.
- The facility consists of 3 helipads, 1 runway, 2-storey terminal building,, power station, fire station.
- The helicopters used are AgustaWestland AW139 (twin-engined, max capacity 15 passengers). They are operated by the airline Helicopteros del Sureste (aka Helisureste) - a company based in Alicante Spain.
- The fly time to Malaga is 30 min.
- Since 2010, Ceuta Heliport is also linked with Algeciras Heliport (Cadiz Spain). The helicopter used is Bell 412 EP (twin-engined, capacity 14 pax) allowing flights to Ceuta with just 10-min fly time.
Ceuta cruise terminal
Ceuta Ferry Port address is "Estacion Marítima, 51001 Ceuta".
Regularly scheduled ferry services from Ceuta to Algeciras (travel time 1 hour) are provided by the companies BALEARIA (10 daily crossings), TRASMEDITERRANEA (5 daily crossings) and FRS Iberia (5 daily crossings).
At a Glance
Easy independently. Cruise ships normally dock at the Muelle de España cruise terminal, approximately 100 m (0.1 mi) from central Ceuta. The historic center, Royal Walls, shopping streets and waterfront are all reachable on foot, so a shuttle is generally unnecessary.
Ceuta is compact, but Monte Hacho and the coastal viewpoints require additional time and transport. For a typical port call, combine a central walking route with either a taxi trip to Monte Hacho or time at a city beach.
Getting from the Cruise Port
- On foot: Plaza de África and the central waterfront are only a few minutes from the cruise terminal. The Royal Walls are also within comfortable walking distance.
- Taxi: The practical choice for Monte Hacho, the San Antonio viewpoint and the more distant coastal areas. Arrange a pickup or return trip rather than assuming a taxi will be waiting at an isolated viewpoint.
- City bus: Useful for some outer districts, but routes do not reach every viewpoint directly. For a short visit, walking and taxis are simpler.
- Terrain: Central Ceuta is largely level, while Monte Hacho involves steep, winding roads and significant uphill walking.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Historic Center and Royal Walls
Allow 2–3 hours for Ceuta’s most practical independent visit. Walk through Plaza de África, see the Cathedral and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Africa, and continue to the Royal Walls and their navigable seawater moat. The bridges and paths around the moat provide some of the city’s best views.
The main sights are close together, although access to museum interiors and sections of the fortifications may depend on opening hours.
Monte Hacho and the San Antonio Viewpoint
Allow approximately 1.5–2.5 hours, including transport and viewpoint stops. A taxi is preferable because the road climbs steeply from the center. The San Antonio viewpoint overlooks the city, port, both bays and the Strait of Gibraltar; the European coast may be visible in clear weather.
Walking up Monte Hacho is possible for fit visitors, but the climb consumes too much time for many cruise calls. Public buses reach the San Amaro area but do not take passengers directly to the viewpoint.
La Ribera Beach
La Ribera is the easiest beach to combine with sightseeing. It lies beside the Royal Walls and approximately 0.5 km (0.3 mi) from the marina area. Its sheltered position on the Mediterranean side generally makes it more suitable for a short swim than Ceuta’s more distant Atlantic-facing beaches.
Allow 1–2 hours and bring everything needed from the ship. Beach services and lifeguard coverage may be seasonal.
Mediterranean Maritime Park
This landscaped waterfront complex, designed by César Manrique, contains saltwater bathing pools, gardens and leisure facilities. It is a convenient warm-weather alternative to the beach and can be reached on foot from the cruise berth.
Allow 2–3 hours if swimming. Admission, operating dates and pool availability should be checked for the day of the call, as the bathing facilities are seasonal.
Panoramic Taxi Tour
Visitors who prefer limited walking can arrange a taxi circuit covering Monte Hacho, San Antonio and one or more coastal viewpoints. Agree on the route, waiting time and fare before leaving. A circuit of about 1.5–2 hours can still leave time for the Royal Walls on foot.
Self-Guided Historic Center Walk
Distance: approximately 3 km (1.9 mi)
Pure walking time: about 45 minutes
Recommended total time: 2–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy, mostly level; some stone surfaces around the fortifications
- Muelle de España: Leave the cruise terminal and follow the waterfront toward the center.
- Plaza de la Constitución: Enter the central shopping and pedestrian area.
- Paseo del Revellín: Walk along Ceuta’s principal central avenue to the House of Dragons, recognizable by the sculptures on its roof.
- Plaza de África: See the Assembly Palace, Cathedral and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Africa around the square.
- Royal Walls: Cross the bridge over the seawater moat and explore the accessible exterior paths and viewpoints.
- La Ribera Beach: Continue to the Mediterranean side for a beach and bay view. Add swimming time if conditions permit.
- Waterfront return: Walk back through Plaza de África toward Muelle de España.
The route can be shortened after Plaza de África, or extended with the Maritime Park if sufficient time remains.
Excursions Beyond Central Ceuta
Scenic drives around Monte Hacho and Ceuta’s outer viewpoints are better with a taxi or organized excursion. More remote beaches and coves also require transport and offer little advantage during a short call unless beach time is the main objective.
Do not plan an independent crossing into Morocco during a normal cruise call. Border formalities and road delays are unpredictable, while Tangier and Tetouan require substantial additional travel. Consider Morocco only through a properly organized excursion that accounts for immigration requirements and the ship’s departure time.
Practical Tips
- Ceuta uses the euro and follows Spanish local time.
- Carry identification ashore and follow the ship’s instructions regarding passports.
- Wear sun protection; exposed streets, beaches and viewpoints can become hot.
- Use comfortable footwear for the stone surfaces around the Royal Walls.
- Check same-day opening times before planning museum or church interiors.
- If visiting Monte Hacho independently, arrange the return taxi in advance.
- Allow at least 45–60 minutes to return, clear port security and board the ship. Leave a larger margin after a taxi trip or organized activity outside the center.
